64s vs 66s - gpx files

I use my Garmin for forest surveys, and am required to record my tracks, and submit them as GPX files. I also have to rename them, replacing the date/time with a UK Grid Reference. On my 64s, I simply had to open Track Manager, rename the file and   save it. Then, later when connecting the unit to my PC, all my tracks are listed, and named  as required, by Grid Ref. Easy.

On the 66s - unless I'm doing something wrong -

1. Save as an activity.

2. Open that activity, and via menu, save it as a track.

3. Open that track, rename it via menu.

But when I connect to my PC and navigate to the Garmin - GPX folder, the tracks are showing as the original date/time - my renaming has somehow been lost. The same applies if I open the Archive folder. But if I disconnect the unit, open Saved Tracks, the tracks appear as being renamed, but in Archive are still Date/time.

So, my question is - is there a quicker way to save a track, without going through the Activity process. And why is my track renamed on the unit, but not when opened on a PC?

Apologies - I recognise this forum is for the 66i, but I assume the process is the same for the 66s. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

  • The 66i has a setting to save activities as BOTH .fit and .gpx. (You're stuck with including .fit because who wouldn't want a completely proprietary format that nobody can read?) On the 66i, you can find this setting buried under Main Menu > Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup > Output Format. I have no idea if saving in .gpx will address your issue with renaming.

What you are seeing (rename effective after a disconnect) may have something to do with the fact that some things get exported in .gpx on connect. Or not.
