Activities/tracks.

Apologies if this is a basic question...

I'm in the process of 'upgrading' from Gpsmap 64 to 66i. I use if for my work, surveying in forests. A requirement is that I save the track with a specific name - a UK Grid Reference. With the 64, I simply renamed the gpx file before saving it, and then when I connected the unit to my PC, they all appeared as I'd named them. With the 66, it seems they are saved as an activity, and I then have to specifically save them as tracks. Even if I have renamed them at the activity stage, they still appear with the time format when viewed as tracks. If I am saving several tracks a day, it is very tedious.

What I need is to be able to rename a track as soon as I've finished it , and for that to be the name I see when I connect to my PC to download the gpx files.

Am I missing something fundamental?

Garmin, in all thier infinite wisdom, automatically record activities, but require the user to actually configure the device to also record tracks. Once you set it up to do so, you will again see the GPX track logs you desire on the device.

Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup > Output Format

Note that the .gpx file contains exactly the same points as the .fit file. Both of them are the logged points from the "activity". Recording sent points (via the Iridium network) and recording logged points (to the activity) are STILL coupled in incomprehensible ways. Anytime you do anything which stops/pauses/starts either one, it pays to check on the other one to see that it is in the state (on/off) that you actually want.

It seems that in trying to elbow into the fitness market, Garmin has compromised its core function.

Not exactly.

GARMIN us solidly in the fitness market, however they are creating some unwanted issues for thier outdoor recreation product users with poor fitness iij integration that is largely unwanted there.

If I want a fitness product, I will buy one.

I do not want my hiking etc. Outdoor products to do double duty if the core device operation is compromised.
