Not exactly a dud. Some of them are designed specifically for charging only. Use the one that came with the unit. It will support both charging and data transfer.
If you knew how many rooms of spare cables and parts I have, you'd realize how loaded that is. The whole point of having standards for cables, is so that they're ubiquitous. Leaving out a twisted pair in a cable, is saving how much money?
