Best method of using 66s to record geotagging on landscape photos

I just purchased a Garmin GPSMAP 66s and am in the process of figuring out how best to use it for geo tagging landscape photos from my Canon DSLR.  I formally used an Etrex 20x but needed a larger screen to view maps.  I got a bit confused with the 66s with activities, tracks, etc as to which one to use for this.  I think Tracks are probably the method to use because I want to end up with a .GPX file that I can ermbed onto my image file using external software like GPicSync  because activities seem to be used for health and fitness uses.  I guess I am asking how best to end up with geotagged photos with the 66s so I can tell exactly where the photo was taken.  I haven't found much info on-line regarding this subject.  any advice will be welcome.

  • Not sure about the 66s (this is a forum for the inReach 66i). The reason I mention that is that "tracks" has a special meaning on the 66i.

In theory, you ought to be able to use either one.  If there is an option to do so, you should select saving activities in both .fit and .gpx.  Note that .fit (only) is usually the default option. Because who wouldn't want their data stored in a proprietary Garmin format that nobody else can read?

On the 66i, this is under Main Menu > Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup > Output Format.

Once you have done that, each activity will be saved twice - once in .gpx and once in .fit.

On the 66i, tracking means "send track points via satellite at longer intervals and record the detailed track as the corresponding activity". I don't know about the 66s.

  • If you load your photos and tracks into BaseCamp, it can geotag them for you.
