Matching up InReach send points and logged track points for 66i?

Have been experimenting with both an InRead Mini and GPSMAP 66i

Using the InReach Mini, set to 10-min sends / 1-min tracking, I'm seeing the 10-min points and rugged track come up on Explore website in near-real time; then in the evening after sync'ing via the EarthMate app these tracks are filled out with the more granular 1-min points. All as expected and working well.

Same setup with the GPSMAP 66i, and again 10-min send points appearing near-real time on the Explore website. But, later sync'ing with the Explore app, these are never filled out with any more granular 1-min points.

This despite the fact the activity is sync'ed up via Garmin Connect, though of course I know the Connect and Explore sides of the house are completely separate. I wonder if this is the answer to my question/problem: the 66i was set to only record in .fit format (not dual .gpx as well) - wonder if this means there's nothing for the Explore app to sync? I tried to subsequently extract the .gpx track from the .fit activity (on device) and then force a sync.. but nothing improved the original 10-min MapShare track shown on the Explore website.

Any ideas?

  • Pretty sure that this works. However, I am set up to create both .fit and .gpx - because there is nothing more useless for data interchange than yet another Garmin proprietary format that nobody else can read. If I could, I'd save in .gpx only.

I just checked the map. In spite of saving both .fit and .gpx, the more detailed track is displayed as if it was an activity. That is, a solid line with no discrete points obviously visible. This may be because I was recording both an iR "track" and an activity. Because it's still impossible to control those two things independently on the 66i. /rant.

The solid bright green line is the activity.

  • Maybe I need to explain a little better:

On the InReach Mini, the IR send points form a rugged track (every 10 minutes per settings) that can be seen on the Explore website as a track called "Track Summary", which is listed in both the MapShare collection and whatever collection the InReach Mini has set for its Primary collection. Afterwards, after a sync with EarthMate, this **very same track** is enriched with the more detailed logged track points. This means anyone looking at the public version of your MapShare page would see the rugged track at first and then the more detailed track later on / following day etc.

For the GPSMAP 66i the same thing happens for the IR send points, ie. rugged track (every 10 minutes per settings) and again that can be seen on the Explore website as a track called "Track Summary" listed in both the MapShare collection whatever collection the 66i has set for its Primary collection. However afterwards, following a sync with the Explore app, this track is never enriched.. instead there is a separate "activity" within the Primary collection for the 66i. This also means anyone looking at the public version of your MapShare page will never see this improved version.

On the device itself, there is the activity and (now I've set it to create both .fit and .gpx) the track (under Archived Tracks).

Quite how the black magic works to tie things together for the InReach Mini I've no idea (though you reasonably expect the points to correlate every 10 minutes) but it does and works very well. Just can't seem to figure out how to do the same for the 66i.

  • This is exactly what I was saying. And I am pretty sure this is by design.

The Mini, being what I will call a "half-legacy" device, has no concept of activities. So the sync sends up the more detailed "logged points" and the web site merges the two versions of the track (on a good day, with a tailwind).

The 66i is a full member of the Garmin ecosystem (for better or worse). It does know about activities. As far as the 66i is concerned, there is no separate set of "logged points". Rather, it uses the set of points in the activity. So, when you sync, it's the activity that gets sync-d. The activity points will not be merged with the sent points, nor will sent points be merged with the activity. Instead, the sent points will overlay the activity line as shown in the screen shot I posted above.

I have no idea what shows up on MapShare after the sync. My use case is such that ALL I care about on MapShare is the more-or-less real time posting of the sent points.

  • I think you are right.

Seems I want to have my cake and eat it - on the one hand I personally prefer that the 66i this part of the Garmin ecosystem (almost, there's still nuances with routes/tracks etc), on the other hand in this specific case it seems the legacy Mini produces a better result ie. there is only one track, one that was provided realtime via satellite 10-min send points, then enriched via locally logged track points at a later date.
