Imputing coordinates (waypoints) manually

I would like to input coordinates (waypoints), manually - as calculated on my charts) to create a route.

I know I can create waypoints digitally, within the handheld device. I know I can also do it from Active Captain on an i-pad. I believe I can also do it with a Garmin compatible Chart plotter.

However, being old school, I prefer to do my old fashioned chart work manually and then transfer my coordinates / waypoints to the handheld (GPSMAP 86i), imputing them manually and creating a route.

Can I do this? I have been trying to find a way (for hours), and I even read the instructions! Without success.

Guidance will be gratefully received.

Thanks

Keith

  • If you know the coordinates, use the Mark button to establish the waypoint. (Initial coordinates will be your current location.) Edit the coordinates (and anything else such as name, symbol or comment) before saving.

If you want to use landmarks on the map to establish the coordinates, display the map, pan so that the white pointer is over the desired location, press Mark to establish the waypoint (initial coordinates will be under the tip of the white pointer). Edit the name, symbol, comment, etc. before saving. Don't forget to press Quit as needed on the map screen to exit pan mode.

Use the Route Planner (from the main menu) to establish a route among waypoints. Route planner also allows you to pick a point on the map, select from available POIs, and so forth.

  • Thank you twolpert,

Having tried your recommendation previously (by following the instruction manual), and now repeating the exercise using your confirmation of how I should manually enter waypoints, I have reached the following conclusion:

Either I am going potty or maybe - just maybe - there is a fault with my device?

If I press ‘Mark’ I can change the waypoint reference, I can also make a note, but when I go to the ‘location’ field, it doesn’t show (or give me) a coordinates format option? IE:

In the ‘location’ field it currently has a reference NO 40509 as the top line, in the lower line it has BRG 30656

I can change these letters and numbers, but not into a coordinates type reference.

So, here I am sitting in Dundee, Scotland, and I wish to create a waypoint (start position), in Gouvia Marina, Corfu (Greece). I therefore would like to input the coordinates N 39•39•18 / E19•51•06 (as calculated from my paper chart in the old fashioned way).

I cannot find how to do this. Is it possible that my GPSMAP 86i has the incorrect data field in ‘location’, or am I still missing something obvious?

Any more assistance / advice / comment you can offer will be very much appreciated.

    Thank you

    Keith

  • You neglected to mention your location. I suspect that the unit is set to the British grid. If you want to use deg/min/sec, set the unit to that format. Home Screen > Settings > Position Format. Selecting the format auto-selects the appropriate datum and geoid, although you can change them independently if necessary.

  • Thank you for your quick reply....

I have found Main Menu > Set Up > Position Format (your references do not exist in my device).

Within ‘position format’ I have found - as you say - I am on British Grid.

However, when I look at the alternative options; I am not clear which I should select to give me the option of inserting deg / min / sec as the ongoing default position. This option is not clear (to me).

My apologies if I am missing something obvious, but it is not evident to me which option I should select?

    Again, thanks for your help.

  • You want hddd*mm’ss.ss” where * is the degree symbol which is not easy for me to type. The format is h=hemisphere, ddd = degrees, mm=minutes, ss.ss” is decimal seconds. At least, I think that’s what you have.

if, instead you have degrees and decimal minutes, you want hddd*mm.mmmm.
