GPSMAP 66i - NEVER turns off completely

I have GPSMAP 66i.

Once I "switch off" the device, I can see that from time to time  (EVERY 10-15 minutes aprox.) the green led blinks, so NEVER completely is switch off.
I sent to Garmin Technical Service in Spain the device. I have got two different answer. First of them was that the device was on a exploration mode, which is not true as I can demostrate on the following videos. Today I got the second answer after sending to the device two times. Garmin tell me that, the green led blink only once, they say is correct because is a signal that every sensors/satellites are completly switch off and the specify that the device only blinks one time!
This is not true, the green led blinks EVERY SINGLE 10-15 minutes CONTINUOUSLY.

I am sharing with all of you two links of videos I recorded that explain what I think is a bad functioning (sorry because  both are in spanish but I guess you will be able to understand the problem only seeing the steps through the menu)

So, I am in a never ending loop of something that I think is not correct and moreover Garmin is not being able to give an appropiate answer because  even they don't know it or why it happens.

I would really appreciate If someone could try to check with your device if it has the same functioning as mine.
If so, it would be very useful for me get your feedback.
MANY THANKS.
Angel.

  • What is the device firmware version? (Setup > About)

  • If the green LED is blinking periodically and the device appears off, it is in expedition mode. Please verify that you did not accidentally set it up that way. There are a couple of different ways you can set it to enter expedition mode. One of the setting turns expedition mode on after two minutes of inactivity.

  • You didn't watch the videos....

He does two tests, one with Expedition Mode Prompted (turns off when prompted) and the other with Expedition Mode Off, and in both  cases, the device is STILL ALIVE 14 minutes later....

I am sending an email to Garmin Software Engineers now....

  • Yeah, sorry. I have a day job. Don't have time to watch 40 minutes of videos in Spanish. Slight smile OP might try a full reset if the f/w is up to date. Expedition mode has always been a bit on the flaky side, but I don't recall ever hearing about this particular symptom.

  • Yeah, sorry. I have a day job

    Ouch!

Don't have time to watch 40 minutes of videos in Spanish.

I was up at 4am comforting a sick pet, so I didn't have anything better to do...

  • Do you have " setup > altimeter > pressure trending > save always " selected?

If 'Yes', this will cause the device to power on once every 15 minutes to take a pressure reading, then power back down. Oh, and the status LED will blink once.

  • OMG!!   The answer is Yes. I had selected 'save always'.  I am checking right now if this solve the 'problem'. I will let you know the result.

Anyway, on the other hand  I am going to share with you the answer I have received yesterday from Spain Technical Service of Garmin.

  • Yes, you are completely right. That is exactly what video shows.

  • Hi all,

Yesterday I received my device from Technical Service Garmin Iberia Spain, after sending it twice.

First interaction, the changed to me the device (in warranty period).

The problem continued and their next answer (their point of view) was that I had swicth on the Expedition Mode. I assured them that it was not activated, as you could see in the video that I also sent to them.

Third interaction, hereunder you have the details yesterday received with the device.

Of course I completly disagree and today I called Technical Service of Garmin Iberia again, saying them that their explanation is not correct. Even I recorded a video showing it just received, like an 'unboxing video' !! (I'm uploading, so I cannot share to you yet)

TEHNICAL SERVICE GARMIN IBERIA NOTES (Spain)

"We have analyzed and checked the whole unit again (we have seen the video you have provided us) and after several tests and contacting our head office the behavior of the unit is correct (even the previous unit was not faulty).

The unit when turned off by holding down the power button for a few seconds, the unit turns off completely (the power off symbol appears).

Once completely off it is normal that after 8/15 minutes the green light flashes once.

This flashing means that all sensors/satellites, have been totally disconnected and it is then that the unit remains totally off.

We have tried several times and once the green light flashes the unit is completely off and does not come back on.

We have repeated this test on the unit and indeed this is how it behaves on this model.

We are returning the serviced unit. The customer will need to keep the unit updated using the Garmin Express program from a computer.

For further questions, or queries, please contact our technical service [email protected] "

At this moment, after my calling, I am waiting a proper answer, but is incredible this kind of answers since last december...
