Basecamp crashes when I transfer this .gpx file to my 66i

I am trying to upload this .gpx file to Basecamp so I can download it to my 66i.

https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/arizona/pyrite-summit-valley-vista-crest-summit-and-javelina-summit

I have the .gpx file on my computer.
I have it transferred into Basecamp.
But when I try to transfer it to my 66i - Basecamp crashes.

I don't know what's going on, but it seems large for a .gpx file (almost 1mb) and there are several thousand points.
I opened the file in Basecamp and went to Properties.  My thought process was I'd try and delete every other 'point' in the file to reduce the file size.
That causes Basecamp to crash, as well.  I don't know if the file from AllTrails is corrupt or what might be going on?
It is a well known and popular hiking app and I never have any issues with their files.

Is there any harm in reducing the 'points' of a file?  It's a 15-mile hike.  Do I really need almost 7,000 points?
Is there another way I can reduce this file size so I can get it to play nice with Basecamp?

  • BaseCamp is having a lot of trouble with crashing lately. I can not use it with any of my GPSr, crashes every time I connect my GPSMAP 66 or Montana 7x0....

  • From memory. (My memory that is) I had a similar issue. It was due to the 66S having auto record "ON" so there was always an unfinished activity in memory. I don't recall all the details but I resolved by turning that "OFF". I prefer to manually start recordings.

  • When you finally find the solution, please register feedback with Garmin asking that the Basecamp code check for that condition and provide a useful error message instead of crashing.

  • I've just used BaseCamp (version 4.6.2) to send that track to my elderly 78s - no problem at all.

If you want to filter the track to a sensible number of points, open the track (like you did before) and at the bottom of the info box you'll see Filter.  I clicked on Auto (the slider was in the middle) and it reduced the track to about 20% or 1,263 points.  As I had the 'Save Original Track' ticked at the bottom left it made a new filtered version.

I agree BC struggles with simple stuff on this fairly high spec laptop.  For example, a few days ago it just gave the spinning circle 'forever' for the mammoth task of changing the waypoint icon for 1,800 waypoints.

I'll install the latest version of BC (4.7.3).  This PC is just the holiday one, my desktop has the latest BC.

Update:  Well the update did not install and gave an error log.  As development of BC has ended there's not much point posting it on the BaseCamp section of this forum either I suppose but may get in touch with Garmin in Aussie when I get home.
