Recently I bought a GPSMAP 66i as a backup navigation and communication tool for mountaineering. In order to get accustomed to this device I recorded a couple of easy hikes and climbs. During recording the device kept warning me that it had lost the gps signal quite frequently.
At home I compared some of the tracks that were recorded by my GPSMAP 66i to my fenix 6x.
When the GPSMAP has a proper signal it is more accurate than the fenix.
However, the GPSMAP keeps losing its signal. In some instances this causes the track to look worse than the one recorded on the watch. Sometimes there could be difficult conditions to blame (trees, cliffs, houses). But in a few instances there is no apparent reason for the loss of signal.
The fenix is also faster at acquiring a signal and determining the current position. In difficult conditions (in front of a cliff) the GPSMAP keeps finding a couple of satellites and losing them over and over again. It took the watch only 15 seconds to find a signal in the same spot without losing it again.
Both devices were connected to a computer and updated before usage. The watch was worn on my wrist and the gpsmap was in the top pouch of my backpack. When I noticed what was happening I carried it in my hand. This did improve the signal a little bit. Nonetheless it still lost the signal a couple of times when my watch did not. GPS + Galileo was used on both devices.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem?
