Do I have to pay the subscription costs of satellite or in-reach to use GPSMAPs 66i?

I wanted to get the GPSMAPS 66i and the Fenix 6xPro as a combination to get into the mountains. The more I read about it, the more it seems I have to pay a monthly subscription in order for the unit to work. Is this true? If I don't pay for additional subscriptions, will the 66i fix on my location, set up way points, track my movements, give me the weather, tell me the elevation, etc?

With the GPSMAP 66i, a paid subscription is required to use the inReach satellite communication features (messaging, sending tracking points to MapShare, inReach Weather, etc.). All the other GPS, mapping, and navigation features of the 66i can be used without an active paid subscription and the device will function like our other non-inReach handheld devices.
