How do I export a recorded activity from the Explore website?

I recorded a activity and I would like to export the GPX file. I can export from the Explore iPhone app but I can not get a proper export from the Explore website. When I export, the GPX file is empty. I have the filter setup and I can see the activity on the map. What am I missing?

I am aware that I can export from the Connect website, but that export has modified data. In particular the elevation has been modified. I need the original raw data.

Do I need to use the Basecamp program?

The original, unedited and unmodified raw data will be stored on the device in the Garmin/Activities/ and Garmim/GPX/ directories.

I see recent .fit files of 'expected' sizes in the Activities folder, but only tiny 2K files in the GPX folder when the gpsmap 66i is connected via usb cable

And you need to set the device to record both .fit and .gpx.

I guess that will take ne back into the manual, since I didn't stumble across the settings to record activity as both .fit and .gpx

My (hopefully temporary) solution is to look at the activity on my phone app, and "share" it via email as .gpx.
There's go to be a better way! :-)
