Boot up error

Each time I boot up the Garmin GPSMAP 66st I get an error. (Data request failed. Check connection and try again.)

Both the wifi and bluetooth are enabled and turned on. I have a clear connection to the internet.  Any idea how to fix this?

I would expect more from the most expensive handheld GPS on the market..

  • there many 'sync'. What exactly should I test? Simply configuring wifi on the device will not do any sync, apart from possibly FW update. It does no sync, as there is even no way to tell where and what it should sync.

The items which are synced via GCM, they need GCM. From my work for professional org, I have to block this as much as I can, but I can test.

Items synced via explore are again different and can be synced only via explore to the explore server I assume.

OTA sync is in my context the sync of the basic inreach profile over the satellite, this works however very seldom, I was told that Garmin is working on this problem currently.

As I am resetting an d reconfiguring the devices currently many times a day, you can tell me what exactly to test an d I can do it.

  • Sorry. Did not realize you were talking about the professional device profile. I have very little knowledge of professional accounts and cannot help with that one.

On personal accounts, the iR PLAN can be updated over the satellite network (after making changes on the explore web site) but (AFAIK) only when initiated from the device itself.

Other Explore-universe information (contacts, messages, routes, tracks etc.) is synced via the Explore mobile app. This occurs "OTA" (as opposed to via a wired connection, which is needed for legacy iR devices) via either a WiFi connection or cell data.

I believe that the Explore app also syncs activities generated on the device to the web. Activities are never sync-d in the other direction.

I do not believe that GCM is required to handle Explore-universe data. However, GCM MIGHT be involved in OTA (WiFi, not Iridium satellite) firmware updates. I can't seem to find a straight answer on that score. Firmware can also be updated via a wired connection and Garmin Express on the desktop.

  • As far as iR update: this seems to be not that much different to my account. It looks as the outbound change has to be initiated from the device, as opposed to older delorme accounts. However it works abt every 10th case only.

Explore data: ok now I understand what you mean by OTA here. BT to phone and from there some way to internet. Clearly the it is a wifi in most cases, but wifi of the phone and not of the device itself.

Yes, activities are also synced to explore web this way, beside being apparently also snyced somewhere else with the GCM. (which I woul dprefer to stop somehow)

And correct, GCM does not communicate to explore. I tried to enter different account in the GCM then in the explore app. All still works, and explore data goes approximately where expected to.

Can not say abt wifi FW updates, as I did it on Express. There is also something sync when connected, I think however this is just a show and nothing is in fact happening at all.

I also set up same account as in GCM in express, meaning different  from iR account, and all still works.

The only real thing I had to configure wifi with Express was the wx forecast (internet one, not iR).

Even when one wifi was configured via Express, and later an additional was configured on the device by hand, it is  not possible to receive wx forecast via the second wifi network. This also needs to go back, connect it to Express, configure the second wifi from there and wx can be received in the new network as well.

But otherwise I think I will not bother abt the wifi in future too much.
