How to move purchased maps from 62S to 66i?

Hi,

I have purchased a 66i, and also have a 62s bought in 2013. On the 62s SD card I have two map sets:

  1. Garmin GB Discoverer 59K All
  2. City Navigator Europe NT 2014.1

What is the correct way to move these maps to the 66i? The old SD card is really slow, from 2013!) so I don't want to use it, I'll just use the internal memory on the 66i. So far I have copied the relevant files (.img, .gme, .unl) across from the SD card to the 66i but I get a "Cannot authenticate maps" error. I've purchased these maps and both devices so I don't see why I can't use them on the new device.

If I put the old slow Sd card in the 66i, the GB Discoverer map seems OK albeit extremely slow, and the City Navigator map results in the "cannot authenticate maps" error (process of elimination).

The City Navigator map works fine in Basecamp (ie it is read from the 66i internal memory without problems).

Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • Maps delivered via download or CD/DVD are locked to the unit on which they are first installed.. Maps delivered on SD cards are locked to the original card, which can be moved from unit to unit. That’s the way Garmin licensing works.

  • Thanks for the reply twolpert.

It seems like I have a problem with the City Nav map on the SD card then, as it throws up the "cannot authenticate" issue when I put the SD card in the new 66i.

Also, I want to replace that SD card with a newer one and just want to move the maps across to the new fast one.

  • If both maps were delivered on a single SD card, both should work. If one was delivered on the card and you copied the other to the card (for example, the other was delivered via download), the one you copied to the card will not work.

I do not believe that maps delivered on SD can be used with BaseCamp. Could be wrong about that.

You are out of luck when it comes to copying to a different card. The map is locked to the physical card on which it was delivered. The whole point is to enforce the license restriction - one card, one unit at a time.

  • Thanks again. Further info on this. The GB Discoverer map came with my 62s and the CityNav was downloaded.

I just spoke to Garmin UK and they confirmed that a downloaded map is locked to the device it is downloaded to, therefore won't work on the 66i which is a huge pain. I mean, I paid for the thing. But this would account for the CityNav map triggering the "Cannot authenticate maps error" on the 66i.

Interestingly, I copied the GB Discoverer map on to the 66 and it works fine, with apparently no lock issues.

So it looks like I have to go forth and buy Euro Citynav AGAIN. That sucks.

  • For excellent free maps for most of the world try these: https://alternativaslibres.org/en/index.php  No limitations and they install to BaseCamp as well.  The .unl files you mentioned are the 'unlock' files to lock the map to the serial number of the card or device.  I doubt the card is causing the slowness issue, especially if it was supplied by Garmin anyway.  Did you ask Garmin support about that aspect?
