Off course Navigate alerts? where is this feature

I am able to navigate a course that i have uploaded via a GPX file or ridden in the past, but there are no alerts if you are off course, or going in the wrong direction (for 11 miles as i did). The best I seem to be able to do is to watch if you are on the purple line. This requires having the screen on all the time or checking it regularly which is not practical bike packing.

Is there any way that the device can let you know if you are off course (my 820 does this somewhat well, and i was hoping that the 66i would have it nailed).

I think we don’t have this feature in the 66i (or I haven’t found it yet).

Are you doing turn by turn routing? I don't know that there's any kind of alert feature. But turn by turn would probably give you better feedback.

I also suspect (but don't really know) that there's some interaction with the "Off Route Recalculation" setting. I don't road route at all, so I have no real experience here.

If i have loaded a GPX that has trails already on it I will navigate to a point on that route and it gives you alerts. I know this doesn't help if you are in the backcountry but it does sometimes.

The GPSMap 66i does in fact feature off-course alerts, however, the setting to enable is under the Marine settings of the device -- not under Routing settings like one might expect. To enable Off Course Alarms on the GPSMap 66i, you can use steps in the following article from the Support Center: Setting Up an Off-Course Alert on an Outdoor Touchscreen GPS. Keep in mind this article is for touchscreen-based devices, but the same exact steps apply to the GPSMap 66i.

When configuring the Marine Alarm on the GPSMap 66i, the default distance that triggers the alarm is 0000.31 miles, however, I've found that for hiking, changing the distance to 0000.01 miles will give you a more useful alarm when navigating a route, more similar in terms of sensitivity to the Off Course alerts on a fenix-series watch.

Is it possible to configure off-course alerts to make continuous loud alarm+vibro? It's very easy to miss single beep in some conditions like wind/rain. And ti's especially needed in this conditions.

It isn't possible to change the tone settings of the off-course alert on the GPSMap 66i other than by increasing the main volume of the device in the settings.

I have played with this setting on the i66 but so far have not had it alert when off course (even when setting tolerance levels right down). Has anyone got this going on i66?

I have been able to get the off-course alerts to work on my GPSMap 66i and confirmed that it works with multiple routing settings configurations. I tested by changing the Routing Settings to Direct Routing (Main Menu > Setup > Routing > Direct Routing) as well as by turning Direct Routing off and using the Hiking Activity setting. With the Marine Off Course Alarm set to 0000.01 miles, as soon as I stray off the course 10 to 15 yards, it makes a tone and a vibrate along with a visual alert on the screen. If it still isn't working for you, please contact your local Garmin Product Support for assistance as there may be an issue with your specific device.
