Off course Navigate alerts? where is this feature

I am able to navigate a course that i have uploaded via a GPX file or ridden in the past, but there are no alerts if you are off course, or going in the wrong direction (for 11 miles as i did). The best I seem to be able to do is to watch if you are on the purple line. This requires having the screen on all the time or checking it regularly which is not practical bike packing.

Is there any way that the device can let you know if you are off course (my 820 does this somewhat well, and i was hoping that the 66i would have it nailed).

    OK. Thanks for all this. I played around and I now have this working for my GPSMAP 66S.

    OK, go get your Garmin GPS.
    First:: Set off course alarm.
    Select Setup > Marine > Marine Alarm Setup.
    1: Select an alarm type. - Off Course Alarm.
    2: Select On.
    3: Enter a distance, and select Go. (Note 0000.01 km = 10 Metres)
     
    Second:: Tones
    Select Setup > Tones > Tones > On.
     
    Third: To ensure the 66S can handle a 250 point route.
    Setting - ROUTING
    - Activity: Direct Routing
    - Route Transitions: Auto
    - Lock on Road: No
     
    Then: Take a track in Basecamp. Convert it to a ROUTE with 250 max waypoints. Copy to GPS. Then when you follow it it will beep for the turns. It will also alarm when you are off course. This alarm repeats until you acknowledge it.
     
    Tested today. Works great.

    In the new software update 8.80 (as of November 17, 2021) there is a new feature (added on course and off course alerts to track navigation) among many others.Does it really works?Can someone confirm it? I'm interested in buying gpsmap 66 and this feature is very important to me.Tnx in advance for replying.

    Yes it does. I haven't been able to find the setting to turn it on/off (presumably there is one though didn't look very hard) however, after updating to 8.80, it "just worked" - off course alerts popping up when I strayed from the planned route.
