Request Location

Hello, I try to use “Request Location” from MapShare Web site, but nothing happens.

I have a Safety Plan and in “MapShare options” I agree to request location from web. When my friends push “Request Location”, web replies that the request has been sent but after it doesn’t appear, otherwise GPSMAP 66i is on and outside.

Any suggest?

Thanks

Lorenzo

  • When you send a location request from the web site, the servers transmit the request via the Iridium network to the device. Once the device receives the request, it sends its location back to the web site. The web site displays it as a "circled plus sign". It may take some time for the reply to appear, particularly if the device does not have a clear view of the sky.

If the response is quick, it may well be that the "circled plus" icon is hidden behind the large blue triangle which marks the device's current location.

  • Thank you, I have already read a similar answer published almost 1 year ago.

Have you tried 66i? This week I asked for "Request position" via the web three times and no "circled star"
appeared on MapShare. Despite my subscription to the Security Plan, only 1 "tracking point" was added to my
bill, so I wonder if there are any problems with 66i.

Has anyone tried with this device?
  • Just tried it with my 66i, f/w 4.30. Worked fine. Showed up within a couple of minutes. Note that I requested it from MapShare but checked it on explore.garmin.com. For some reason, there is activity-based clutter on my MapShare page which obscures my current location. And which I can't seem to filter out. So I can't verify that it showed up on MapShare. But the locate request worked fine.

Edited to add: Cleared up the clutter on MapShare (magic?). Locate shows up there, too.

  • Thank you Tom. I tried yesterday but it doesn’t work.

Do you see a “circled plus” sign or a “circled star”?

I have read there are some problems with inReach services in Europe, are you in the “old continent” or in other countries?

    Thanks

  • I'm in the US. You're right - circled star.

You can track known outages from the status page. Look for the colored dot and caption (typically green, "All Systems Operational" in the upper right corner of the explore.garmin.com page. That's a link to the status page. From the status page, you can subscribe to email notifications of outages.

This only reflects known outages. In my experience, not all outages - especially short ones - show up here. And there's typically some lag between the onset and when the problem is reported and acknowledged.

  • I tested mine this morning in New Zealand and it worked fine.  It does not pop up a message, which would be a nice feature, but it is clear where the device is currently located.

  • can you please tell me also how do you delete or otherwise remove those 'circled plus' or 'circled asteriks' from the map? What is the secret?

  • I am not aware of any way to delete them permanently. You can filter them out by un-checking "locate" under message types in the filter pane.

  • this is completely crazy. So they will accumulate for ever? Messages, tracks and what ever can be deleted, but those marks not?

I certainly do not have a collection of those marks on our delorme account, I can delete them there.

I just got an answer from professional.support, they have no idea how to remove this too.

  • It tried, but it failed. Zoom in far enough on the map so you can clearly see the marker. Hover over it. Mouse will turn to pointing index finger. Click to open the balloon associated with the mark. Click the trash can icon in the upper right corner of the balloon. When I tried this with my one and only location "reply" marker, I first got a confirmation pop-up. After I confirmed my intent, I got this error.

So you're supposed to be able to do it, but there is a bug. You can always try opening a support ticket with that info. I presume this behaves the same way on an enterprise account, but have no way to test that.
