scratch on screen of 66i

looks like the screen of 66i is not scratch resistence since mine got a big scratch on it in the first trip! Is there any way to fix that ? i am not sure even, it is a plastic or glass?

  • Like previous Garmin hand helds the screen is plastic and scratches easily.  There's a few options for getting rid of the scratch:

    1) Remove it with the likes of Xerapol.  This is done under running water after the case is dismantled.  Use the supplied 1,500 then 2,000 grit wet & dry paper then finish with the Xerapol cream.  However as the screen will still not look like new it is best used on units that are already very used looking.

    2) Ask a dealer in the US if they can get a a shop display case or 'dummy case'.  These are cases with no circuit inside intended for shop display.  Not all the features are included sometimes like external contacts but as the 66i power contacts at the bottom are on the rear half of the case the front half may well be a good option and restore the appearance to new.  Usually priced quite cheap like under US$20.

    3) Out of warranty replacement.  This can be done by the owner calling Garmin support.  If available it will be a fraction of new price.  You'd need to arrange the transfer of your subscription.

Garmin supply screen protectors (for anti-glare) for only 2 models - the Montana (part 010-11654-05 NZ$12) and Alpha 100 (part 010-11828-05 NZ$11) so it's necessary to buy something for a phone etc and trim it to suit.
