Approach 62 & Z30

I have the Approach 62 and just purchased the Z30 rangefinder.

As i understand the interactions between the watch and rangefinder I expected that the pin distance from front and back would appear on my watch. That is not happening. All that shows up is the distance to the pin.

I also understood that once i shot the pin the watch would adjust the distance to the pin as i move closed. That is also not happening.

When i paired the rangefinder and watch it seems that they do not stay connected. If I check the connection status on the watch it shows as searching for the Z30. Only when I press the power button on the Z30 does the connection occur and it is dropped a few second later. Perhaps this is intended to save battery life?

Please advise.

  • After an extensive chat with Garmin support I determined that the watch will not display pin distance from front and back to the pin. On the approach 62 I only get an arc and distance to the pin. I believe the introduction video is misleading in that it states that the data will be displayed on compatible devices.

  • I will submit your feedback to our team regarding the introduction video for further consideration in improving our support content for the Approach Z30 based on your comments above...and thank you for following up on the post after contacting a golf specialist through Garmin Support.

Since the Approach S62 already displays the front, middle and back of the green during the round, the range relay displays the arc to view conveniently from the arc, and then the watch provides distance data for the front and back of the green when sighting through the viewfinder on the Z30. This info also is exchanged when the Z30 is paired to the Garmin Golf app as well in the same manner.

More info on range relay can be found on the Garmin Technology page in the link here: Range Relay - Garmin Golf Technology

  • Please advise HOW the S62 was paired to the Z30, as the’Settings | Sensors and Accessories | Add New’ currently only shows Heart Rate, Speed/Cadence, Foot Pod, and Tempe. When selecting ‘Search All’, no devices are found (& yes, the Z30 is on).

    Maddening that it’s this complicated.

  • To pair the Approach Z30 to the Approach S62, you must open Settings > Golf Settings > Scroll down and select the "Pair Rangefinder" option in the list > The S62 will then display "Searching for rangefinder" with blue circles spinning > Put the Approach Z30 into pairing mode and it will then get found by the watch to complete the setup.

  • you need to do a full update of the watch through garmin express for the watch to connect to the Z30, then Rangefinder comes up as an option
