Practice swings Detected as Actual Swing

Overall enjoying the watch and still learning all about it. One thing that is really annoying is my watch thinks practice swings are actual shots and prompts me right when I am taking my actual swing/shot very distracting to have a vibration from the watch mid swing as you can imagine.

any tips on how to reduce the sensitivity of the detection?

happens for driver/woods/iron shots. Watch on left arm for a right handed golfer.

TIA

  • If taking a full swing practice swing, the watch may interpret the movement as an actual shot due to the angle of the arm movement, speed, or any impact resulting from the club face making contact with grass.

Also if you are using Approach CT-10 sensors on your clubs, the sensors provide the capability of ruling out a practice swing if the practice swing and the shot were from the same location.

[Edited]:  In addition to my original reply only mentioning the CT-10 sensors...I would also like to add that the Approach S70 by itself through the AutoShot feature, the watch will only record one shot if both the actual shot and practice swing were detected in the same location as well.

  • Thank you the actual shot detection does work correctly when 2 different shots (practice and actual) from the same location. My concern is the vibration distraction during my swing. I don’t see any way to turn off the vibration for the prompt. Is this something that could be turned off?

  • During rounds of golf using the golf app on the S70, the club prompt feature does not vibrate when the list of clubs appear on the screen to select which club was used once a shot is detected. It simply appears on the screen when a full swing shot is detected for the user to select the corresponding club that was used.

If you are receiving vibrations on the watch during a round of golf, then the vibration is likely from a smart notification coming through from the pairing to your mobile phone...or potentially could be the phone connection alert...however, it should be obvious as the banner on the screen for notifications...and the alert banner for the phone connection alert would display on the screen during the golf activity if you have smart notifications enabled in the settings on the watch.

The Tempo Training activity app on the watch, is the only golf related activity on the S70 that would vibrate when taking the shot if you have vibration enabled in the settings menu accessible within the Tempo Training activity app > The vibration function will vibrate to assist the timing of the back and forward swing during tempo training sessions to help to assist with a 3.0 tempo.

  • Thank for you reply. I have all smart notifications turned off. The vibration is specifically happening to prompt the club input (vibration and on screen prompt for a club selection at the very same time) similar to scoring when leaving the green on a hole (it vibrates when prompting for the score confirmation). This is causing issues for me with the thought in the back of my mind over every shot is my wrist going to vibrate during my swing….

  • Just a bit more….the vibration does not happen right away. The prompt comes up right away but the vibration happens ~10 seconds later if you don’t do anything else.

  • If you take a practice swing...make sure the practice swing is in the same location as the ball (take the practice swing as close to the actual ball location as possible) ..and if a shot is detected from the practice swing, then tap the Back button on the lower right side of the watch to clean the club selection and then take your actual shot....which should then prompt the shot selection to re-appear without the worry of the reminder vibration to go off.

This would be the only way to avoid the reminder vibration from alerting while you are setting up for your actual shot.

  • I was about to reply with this exact solution. Quick Look at the watch before hitting my shot and clearing a detected shot by using the back button took care of it.   Verified on course it works this way.  Thanks!

  • @garmin-cody thank you for pointing me to the correct thread. This is a big problem. The vibrate is for the club prompt and should be able to turn it off. My S60 did not have this problem. I don't want my watch to vibrate ever for any reason. Can't I just turn vibrate off entirely? Please?
