HRM Pro Plus On?

Hi there,

I recently purchased the HRM Pro Plus and connected it to my Garmin s70 watch for my runs. I don’t get any notification or banner that my HRM is connected or on. Looking under the watch, the green OHR light is on. Is there anyway I can tell that my strap is on without going to settings and seeing it “connected”?

  • Are you sure it is compatible with the S70?
I do not see it listed in the compatibiliy list
    support.garmin.com/.../

  • The Garmin HRM-Pro/Pro-Plus is compatible with the Approach S70 and will alert when the activity menu is open with a banner at the top of the screen showing "Ext HR Connected" with a heart icon above the message.

The alert will appear when you tap the upper right side button from the time screen to open the activity apps menu on the watch. The HRM will only connect during activities to overwrite the wrist-based sensor recording while the activity timer is going on the watch.

The alert will not appear if you have "Do not disturb" enabled on the watch.

  • hello, does the HRM pro+ overrides cadence on s70 as well? It not, is there a way to make HRM a primary device for cadence and other running metrics considering it has dynamic pods hardware

  • Only one device can be set as the primary, and if you switch the HRM-Pro as your primary device...Training Status will not update from your watch as the Approach S70 needs to be the primary in order for that to meet the requirements.

  • Hey Cody, thanks for your reply. However, I don't think I can set HRM pro+ as a primary device is it? I cannot find this option anywhere either on the app or watch. It's a shame since I hope I can use HRM as a pace and cadence monitor as it is more capable than S70 on running.

Is there anything I can do to get cadence and running metrics from HRM instead of S70 while running?

  • Correct, the HRM-Pro and the HRM-Pro Plus are will not display as an available device for Primary Wearable/Primary Training Devices settings.

Also, the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus cannot provide run cadence or any of the other running dynamics, as the strap requires pairing to a compatible Garmin watch while recording an activity to provide those metrics.

The Approach S70 offers one of the six running dynamics with cadence provided in real time during the activity, with the data field for cadence also configurable on the data screen in the activity settings. The S70 is not a compatible watch that allows all six of the running dynamics to record while the HRM-Pro is paired during activities, so the benefit of using the HRM-Pro paired to the watch during the activity is limited electrical signal derived heart beat data vs using the wrist-based sensor directly on the watch.

Below are links to the Garmin Support pages providing more info for the running dynamics and cadence features to reference if needed:

  • HRM Pro Plus does provide pace and cadence as well as other running dynamics, as stated on the website https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/770963#overview It can also be used as a standalone device to capture all running dynamics. Am I misunderstanding this?

On the "compatible devices" page, it also says it is compatible with the S70, though it does not state in detail which dynamics are compatible with each watch.

So, to recap, HRM Pro Plus can only be used as a heart rate monitor with S70. Due to technical limitations, other running dynamics, such as pace and cadence, vertical ratio, etc., will not be transmitted to the watch. Do I understand this correctly? Garmin has too many devices, and finding compatibility for each device is extremely confusing.

  • Running dynamics will not record unless the HRM-Pro paired to a watch that supports the feature, and those metrics will get then record once an activity is started on the watch.

My previous comment has an article linked explaining this, and on the product page for the HRM Pro you linked above also states the running dynamics feature will provide the data when paired to a compatible device.

  • Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I fully understand your explanation. I just pointed out that it literally listed the s70 as a "compatible device" How would anyone know which running dynamics the watch will be compatible with? Everyone would assume it gets all the metrics since it is, well, "compatible" with HRM. It would be great if you could pass along this feedback. I bought HRM pro plus because I want running dynamics data, which says on the page my watch is "compatible". As I said, finding compatibility for each Garmin device is confusing.
