Hazards and layups one tap shortcut on S70

Recently upgraded from an S62 to the S70 mainly for the superior screen! Got a tip and a question/feature request..

QuestionQuestion: On the S62 during golf mode, I could just tap the map once to bring up the nearest hazard or dogleg or layup "dot" and it would tell me how far it is straight away. I could then press the up or down arrow to scroll through all the dots and distances to them. It doesn't seem to do the same thing on the S70 and I have to tap somewhere on the map and zoom to find out the distance to that point on the map. Am I missing something? Would prefer it to work how the S62 does. Thanks!

BulbTip: If you want to wear the S70 over arm sleeves or a jacket, you'll need to turn off the heart rate monitor for wrist gestures to work. If you don't, your screen won't turn on when you raise your wrist to look at the watch unless you tap it. Didn't have to do this on the S62. On some Garmin models, this is a power mode called Jacket Mode (which just turns off the heart rate monitor!).

  • The Approach S70 allows access to preset hazard distances by tapping on the map for the hole, along with touch targeting. The zoom option is new and specific to the Approach S70 where you can zoom out and back in using the slider on the right side of the display screen to target any point on the map.

The S62 allows users to tap on the map of the hole, which will then provide the option to view hazards preset, or users can tap the map once again to zoom into a specific section with the option to tap the +/- icons adjust the view back out or in.

Both the S70 and S62 display the Up and Down buttons at the bottom of the display screen when the map of the hole is tapped to cycle through preset hazards throughout the hole.

  • Hi  - thanks for your reply here and everywhere else on this forum :)

After spending a bit more time with the S70, I have now figured out that when tapping on the map of the hole on the S70, it usually zooms into the configured Driver distance, and that's when I can tap up to go to the first hazard/layup preset. The difference with the S62 is that it would go to the nearest hazard/layup preset instead of the Driver distance when tapping on the map. Is there a setting available where I can have it go to the nearest hazard preset instead of the driver distance on the S70, so that it behaves the same as the S62?

Another thing I was wondering is if it's possible to set the default zoom when viewing hazard presets on the S70. I find it is too zoomed in for my liking when scrolling through hazards and if I'm not concentrating, I lose track/context of where it is on the hole - unless I zoom out of course, but that's another step which interrupts my play. I might be wrong but on the S62, it seemed more zoomed out so it was easier to see the hazard more in the context of the hole layout compared to the S70.

    Thank you :)

  • The Approach S70 by design will display the section where the driver distance arc is, when the map layout is initially tapped from the tee box. there is no option switch the view from displaying section where the driver arc is marked at this time.

Hazards must be accessed by tapping the Up and Down icons at the bottom of the hole view screen. The current way the hole view displays allows the user to immediately have the section of the hole displayed where the user's average driver distance is displayed, this then allows potential hazards and other on the hole layout to be quickly accessed, so you can check for hazards closest behind where you ball is expected to land...or ahead of where the ball is expected to land from the tee shot on par 4 and 5 holes.

The zoom setting in hole view will always default to the preset amount where it is set to anytime you enter into the hole view screen. The benefit of the preset zoom always appearing, allows for consistency during the round when accessing that menu, instead of the previous zoom you set adjusted when you last accessed hole view...and prevents the user from having to make an unexpected adjustment...or having to remember what they changed it to last. The current configuration allows accessing hole view to be kept simply and consistent, so users hopefully can focus more on their shot.

The Approach S62 displays a zoomed out, full view of the hole when you tap the map to access hole view, and has the same Up and Down icons at the bottom of the screen to cycle through hazards. Then users must tap the map again to then get a zoomed in view, which will default to the driver arc when teeing off on par 4/5 holes.

The Approach S62 also only allowed for two different zoom levels, where the entire layout is displayed in hole view, or the one zoomed in view can be seen. The Approach S70 features and improved slider tool to the side of the screen in hole view, that allows much more variability in the zoom scale you want to see map detail on the hole layout.

  • Hi , thank you for the detailed response and taking the time out to gather them from the team.

While I can definitely agree to some of the justifications behind them, I am not 100% on board with them in all scenarios since golf is very situational and strategic. I will list some points below that I hope the UX team might consider - and I'd be open to thoughts from other golfers as well (please chime in guys!).

The Approach S70 by design will display the section where the driver distance arc is, when the map layout is initially tapped from the tee box. there is no option switch the view from displaying section where the driver arc is marked at this time.

    1. This assumes that everyone will tee off with Driver on every par 4 and 5 and further assumes the driver arc is what everyone wants to zoom in to

    • Firstly, I really like the drive distance arc and I agree that Driver is often the play but it isn't always. Sometimes a fairway wood or long iron is the better play, e.g. tight fairways or links courses where accuracy and/or a lower ball flight and/or distance control is the safer play.

    • CT10 sensors - I use these sensors so if I grab my 4 iron, it then wouldn't make sense to zoom to the driver distance arc since it's not relevant.   (EDIT: I realised that the batteries on my CT10 sensors for my 4i and 3w were flat, and hence that's why the driver distance arc was still displayed! After changing the batteries, the distance arc changes to the respective club I've taken out of the bag, e.g. 4i average distance. However, for players not using CT10 sensors, this point probably still applies since if they take out another club, the driver distance arc is still going to show by default.)

    • Suggestion:  Have a setting that changes how tapping on the map behaves,
e.g Tapping on the map shows:
      • 1. Driver distance arc section
      • 2. Nearest hazard / layup

The zoom setting in hole view will always default to the preset amount where it is set to anytime you enter into the hole view screen. The benefit of the preset zoom always appearing, allows for consistency during the round when accessing that menu, instead of the previous zoom you set adjusted when you last accessed hole view.

    2. This assumes everyone wants Garmin's preset zoom (zoomed in) on the hazard or driver distance arc.

    • Zooming in on a hazard or layup sometimes takes away the context of where it is in relation to the hole. It is then an extra step to zoom out with the slider. Particularly with layups, the full view is arguably more useful as the player can see if it makes sense strategically if they can see the teebox, layup point / dogleg and green in a single view. When it's zoomed in, they lose that high level overview until they zoom out.

    • When using the slider to zoom out, due to the small screen size, sometimes the hazard is no longer centre which can get a bit annoying having to move the map around or scroll through the hazards again, taking up more time on the S70. This is why I preferred it on my previous S62 as it would stay zoomed out (by default?) and this saved me time before my shot.

    • Remembering my zoom setting the last time I used on that hole would actually be useful :)

    • Suggestions:
      • Default autozoom scale:   1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x  (where 1x is not zoomed at all i.e. full view)
      • Autozoom on hazards/layups/driver arc: On / Off
      • Remember last zoom setting: On / Off

     - I'm hoping I'm not just an edge case here and would be keen to hear if these suggestions have been raised before and/or considered. Also curious to see if it's a lot of effort for the software engineers. Being in the software development industry myself, I totally get that edge cases would take low priority and that even small changes can have major regression testing implications.

My question would be - is there any chance that these suggestions would be considered and possibility implemented this year, or would it be a flat out "no" (in which case, I'll just learn to live with it and/or consider a different ecosystem)? If the preset autozoom could be set by the user to on/off or full view/zoom, that could possibly be enough.

Thank you again for getting back to me :)

  • Your feedback is appreciated, and I have forwarded your comments for further consideration. I cannot guarantee any changes to the way the design of hole view currently is formatted on the Approach S70...but if any announcements regarding that option become available, I will let you know.

You can also outline any features further through the ideas page on the site as well to submit any additional details regarding that feature through the web form here: https://www.garmin.com/forms/ideas/

  • Thanks so much , much appreciated. I hope to hear from you again this year :) thanks again.

  • Couldn’t agree more with GARFNX. I just bought the S70 to upgrade from my S62, primarily for the higher resolution. I was already hesitant to get it with the huge price point only for the resolution alone. I realize it comes with other smart watch features, but I already have an Apple Watch for that.

Even with all the doubt I figured the higher resolution would be a good feature to have out on the course and bought it. I am underwhelmed and disappointed with the watch, and it’s basically all the points GARFNX mentioned. On the course, I don’t want to keep fidgeting with the watch with the zoom functions, especially if I’m wearing a glove on my hand. The S62 view is so much better because it gives you the full hole layout and going through the hazards one by one. It’s very convenient and easy to use. I was hoping the S70 would at least give the option to have that same view.

I’ll be returning the watch and hopefully Garmin makes that option available in a later model and I will reconsider getting it again.
