Do I need to create new clubs in "My Bag" for approach shots, chips and bunkers?

I know this question has been raised in the past but all the information I found online was from 2+ years ago.  I have the S70 watch and was wondering if there is any new info or recommendations regarding this. I am interested in getting accurate club distance data.  therefore, when I am hitting a partial wedge for an approach shot or chipping with another club, I don't want those distances being factored in?

Do you know if Garmin automatically detects approach/chip/bunker shots and selectively excludes them from the stats on club distance?

What about mishits?  Does Garmin exclude extreme outliers from the club distance averages?  If not, I suppose I should create a club called "Mishit", ya?

Would love to hear what the "best practice" is right now for the superusers using the S70.  Thanks all.

  • For chippings with an e.g. iron-P I have created additional clubs.

  • The AutoShot detection feature on the watch will detect full swing shots, and is not designed to detect chip shots, or putts unless the Approach CT-10 club tracking sensors are used, and paired to wedges/putter clubs.

If a chip shot is detected, and the watch display prompts your club list asking which club was just used for the shot, you can simply tap the Back button on the lower right side of the watch to not assign the shot to a club.

In order to assign full swing shots to the specific clubs you have in your golf bag, you would need to set your specific clubs in the My Bag section of the Garmin Golf app to sync the specific club types to the S70. This will allow your specific clubs to display during rounds of golf to assign the club to a shot, when the shot is detected.

  • Thanks so much Cody for your explanation.  This is very helpful information.

I am interested in tracking by pitch, chips, and putts as well as my full swing shots.  So you would recommend the CT-10 sensors in order to do this?  I assume when I have the CT-10 sensor on the club, I don't get a prompt to "select a club" -- is that right?

Can I ask a follow-up question: let's say I have a CT-10 sensor on my Pitching Wedge (PW).

Scenario #1: I'm 130 yards out and I hit a FULL swing PW to land it on the green.

Scenario #2: I'm 50 yards out and I hit a PARTIAL swing PW to land it on the green

Scenario #3: I'm in the rough around the green and CHIP with my PW to land it on the green.

Does the Garmin watch discriminate between these scenarios?

Is the data from the chip shots and partial swing shots included in the overall club distances for the full swing shots?  (because if so, that will screw up the data for my PW, and it would make the case for creating separate clubs in "My Bag" for chip and pitch shots).

Thanks for any insight you can provide.  I really appreciate it.

  • i use the CT-10 sensors, so i'm really interested in this answer!

  • The CT-10 sensors paired to the clubs being used for partial swings or chip shots will allow them to be detected, along with the putter having one of the sensors paired will also allow for putts to be detected on the green each hole.

Below are support links relevant to use of the sensors as well for reference if needed:

  • I guess the question is "What shots are included in my performance data, specifically club distances".

Garmin has said that outliers are excluded, so maybe that means if you chunk a ball 5 yards from 150y, it will be excluded. Garmin has said that short game shots are not included in your club average and max distances.

I guess most users here don't believe this as many have created 'fake' clubs in their bag and assign things like pitch outs, recovery shots, etc to this club. This is a 'just in case' so that distance is excluded.

If you are using CT-10s on all your clubs, you are stuck. As an example at PW recovery shot from behind a tree will be a PW because of the CT10. What you can do is post round in dashboard or app, edit the club to be a fake club or blank. I don't recall if you can do it right on the watch just after the swing.

My opinion, I'd use a fake club for anything that isn't a full shot, even around the green.

  • very simple solution would be editable distance in Garmin Golf ,Gear section.  For unknown reasons however Garmin doesnt want to give this very basic option most probably because they think nobody would by CT10 .  They are very wrong.  CT10 would be still good tool to measure and count strokes.  Additionally editable distance would give new life to Virtual caddie feature which is now useless.

  • Yeah and per our countless other posts where this has been discussed, and responded to, explained, and an open ticket where this feedback has submitted...unfortunately this will not be an available option at this time.

As communicated, maybe this will be offered in the future, but not until further notice.
