Approach S70 Wrist Gesture Sensitivity when Playing Golf

I moved from a Vivoactive 4 to an S70 and while most features are much improved, when playing golf I constantly have to use an exaggerated wrist gesture to get the S70 screen to move from dim mode to bright. I've gone back to the Vivoactive 4 to test, and it has a sensitivity option for the gesture, and wearing both at the same time, it comes on with much subtler movements.

Having to make this exaggerated wrist movement with the S70 takes you out of your game to thinking about fiddling with your watch. Is it possible to have a sensitivity feature for the wrist gesture movement on the S70 similar to the Vivoactive 4? Even if only available during activities. The dim mode when always on is effectively useless in sunlight conditions. I'd prefer the screen to be off with a more sensitive wrist gesture.
Thanks!

  • yes i feel the same. I noticed this and its very annoying

  • Anything on this from Garmin? The Venu 3 has a wrist gesture sensitivity setting similar to the Vivoactive 4. It also has an AMOLED screen if battery life is the issue. Is it likely a setting like this may be added in the future to the S70?

I really like the watch apart from this and am still in the period where I can return it. Hoping not to though.

  • The Approach S70 features a different display type, and will exhibit different display behaviors compared to other Garmin watches that feature a sunlight-visible transflective MIP display (such as the VivoActive 4).

The Approach S70 features an AMOLED display with customizable display features different than other Garmin watches. The display can be turned off in the Settings menu. Turning the display off can impact certain functions of the display, and you may not be able to adjust some display settings.

The display settings while using the Golf activity app on the S70 can be accessed through the following menu:

    1. Tap the middle button on the side of the watch from the regular time screen to open the quick access menu.
    2. Select the Settings box > Scroll down the list on the next screen and select the System option at the bottom of the menu.
    3. Select Display > During Activity.
    4. You can then make adjustments to the display during activity for the Always On, Brightness, Red Shift, Alerts, Wrist Gesture, and Timeout settings from there.

Why Is the Display on My Approach S70 Not Turning On?

  • Thanks @Garmin-Cody for the reply, I was aware of those settings though from the device manual and have tried all of them.

My issue is that the wrist gesture sensitivity on the S70 doesn't respond that well, and you have to really try sometimes to get the backlight on the display to come on. This process of wriggling your wrist about takes you out of your game somewhat. If you look at reddit or just google this issue with the S70 there are others who also experience the same problem.

My question was, the Garmin Venu 3 has a Gesture Sensitivity setting, and it has a comparable AMOLED display (and golf app) to the S70. Is there any likelihood that this setting will at some point in the future be merged to the S70's OS? It may improve the issue.

See here for the specific  feature I'm referring to -

And the line from it -
Select Sensitivity to adjust the gesture sensitivity to turn on the display more or less often.

  • I had a similar problem during golf with my Epix Pro, but I think the settings are similar to S70 in this case. Sometimes (with gesture on) my watch did a selection on the screen by itself. The solution for me was to deactivate wrist gesture and use only activation via tab. If I have to do an action on the golf map like checking distance or selecting a club, I have to tap twice and that works fine (for me).

  • Make sure sleep mode is disabled. I had the same problem and it was that. Small movement now activates the screen.

  • 厚手の服の上につけると反応が悪く、直接腕につけると反応します。厚手の服が振動を吸収しているように思います。

    1. Tip: If you want to wear the S70 over arm sleeves or a jacket, you'll need to turn off the heart rate monitor for wrist gestures to work. If you don't, your screen won't turn on when you raise your wrist to look at the watch unless you tap it. Didn't have to do this on the S62. On some Garmin models, this is a power mode called Jacket Mode (which just turns off the heart rate monitor!).
  • The Approach S70 does not have a jacket mode setting designed into the device like some of the Outdoor Wearable watch models have in settings.

There is a display setting icon in the quick access settings menu (tap the middle button on the side from the time screen to access) where users should make sure that the icon is not showing highlighted in purple. The display icon should be grayed out to ensure the display is not turned off to avoid the display not normally activating.
