Is it mandatory to use Windows/macOS to upgrade maps?

I bought a S70 a few weeks ago, it is setup with my iPhone. I l already successfully upgraded to latest firmware.

today I installed Garmin Express on macOS, setup my watch, and I have been surprised to be offered 13 updates (no firmware) mostly maps one. Is it mandatory to use desktop application to get all updates? If yes, how can we know in advance if any pending update?

Because I barely find any good reason to use the desktop app as everything else seems to work fine from mobile. On the other hand, I would not want to miss important updates.

The Approach S70 can receive map updates in three different ways:

Automatic Course Updates through Garmin Golf App - if played course twice with scorecard synced from round on the course, while the map…

The Approach S70 can receive map updates in three different ways:

Automatic Course Updates through Garmin Golf App - if played course twice with scorecard synced from round on the course, while the map for that course was out of date.
Garmin Express - Corded connection to a home computer that meets the requirements, available for reference here.
Map manager via WIFI - This option allows the user to check for map updates via a wifi connection to a network directly from the System menu on the watch.
