Virtual Caddie

Has virtual caddy been updated in the S70 as to have an easy way to correct errant shot recordings? I have owned both the MARC and the S2 of which both have had the same issue. There are hundreds of unsatisfied customers of these watches (Forum S62) that have ask about an update that would be very easy to set up.  As you know for the past 3 or 4 years, we've only received a note saying we're working on it. As I've stated before the watches are great but virtual caddie is totally useless without accurately recorded distances. Putter distances of 50 yds and drivers at 1200 yds are ridiculous with no easy way to change them. I really want to be a good customer but to pay this kind of money for something advertised that does not work as advertised is not acceptable. I'm interested in the S70 but only if guaranteed it will work as advertised.

Thank You

  • Why? If someone has 300+ rounds going back 10 years, why would you even consider using data from 10 years ago to determine club suggestions.

There is no way that helps the golfer.

Is the calculation at least weighted to recent rounds?

It would be very sad to know the math is something like (# shots x distance) / # of shots (excluding outliers).

This is just common sense stuff Garmin should be fixing and not waiting for our suggestions.

  • Users have the option to exclude scorecards from performance stats if they do not want particular scorecards affecting club recommendations for virtual caddie features as well.

Regardless of whether a user is utilizing virtual caddie or not, excluding from stats would be recommended for any scorecards they do not want affecting features or stats.

  • Thanks. I will try that. I bit of a headache to go and exclude some old scorecards but going forward, nice to have the option to self manage which should be used for caddie suggestions.

  • Thanks - club retirement seems like a better option than a new account. I tried setting up a new account, but because garmin golf is also tied to garmin connect, I lose all my health and fitness data

  • Club retirement is a good option if you are wanting to start tracking average and max distances. I retire and start a new club list when I get new clubs, or if I have made advancements through training with my swing that have significantly improved my shot quality. (Most often due to getting new clubs for me).

Retiring the clubs will not affect virtual caddie though suggesting clubs throughout the round though, as it will still base the suggestions on prior qualifying scorecards.

  • Statistics 101:  The VC suggests clubs based on the mean (average) distance each club is hit.  The more data points you have, the more accurate the mean calculation and the smaller the standard deviation.  The VC doesn't use a single data point from 10 years ago.  That 10 year-old data point was used to calculate the mean distance 10 years ago when it was entered, same as the data point you entered two days ago.  The feedback is ongoing.

One idea could be for the VC to only include data points from the 20 most recent rounds in the same manner handicaps are calculated.  However, the less data points to have, the less accurate the VC club recommendation.

  • ALL - I have had issues with the VC as well.  Cody and the Garmin team have been great to work with!!  They are really trying to get these issues resolved.

Three things are really needed to resolve these issues:

    1. An understanding of basic statistics (how to calculate mean, std. dev., what is an outlier, etc.)
    2. An understanding of how the VC is supposed to work.
    3. An understanding of how the VC is actually working (algorithm)
  • There is one simple solution which Garmin perfectly knows for many years.  Option of editing club distance.  I use Golfshot for Apple Watch and for each club you can enter avg or max  club distance.  When you come to tee box or a ball at course it shows you which club to use. Many other golf apps have this option too I guess.  Garmin VC is useless and better to switch off this option during your rund.
