Incorrect distances

I have used the S70 for a few rounds at my home course, but the last two rounds the distances have been way off.

On one hole tee to green with my Z82 shows 324 yds but the watch is showing 227 yds.  As I get closer to the green the differences are less.  When I'm 80 yds out the watch shows 20 yds.  When I'm about 170 yds out the watch shows 120 yds.

I haven't received the new update yet but don't know if it will fix the issue.

  • But I read that it’s generally about 2 yards for every 10 degrees.

so in my situation and in your (oldgolfingnut) situation this doesn’t make any sense to have +32 yard diff.

im going to turn off weather in the plays like setting and see.

I wish someone who plays more often can try out these different setting regards to plays like.

  • GPS accuracy is within 3 meters (10ft) of your actual location 95% of the time.

The Approach S70 uses a combination of course mapping with preset distances for each hole, GPS with multi-band GNSS, and through the new enhancements to the PlaysLike Distance feature.

The new enhancements to PlaysLike Distance feature, which accounts for elevation changes on the course, wind speed, wind direction, and air density by showing the adjusted distance to the green. Air density is a combination of factors including temperature, humidity, and air pressure.

Changes to the yardages from PlaysLike Distance will vary depending on location and the specific course being played.

Garmin Support is available as well for those having distance concerns to discuss the issue in real time, so they can ask further questions about your distance concerns to further determine the issue.

  • I am interested to know if there is anyone who can say his/her S70 PlaysLike shows realistic distances. I think these S70 devices suffer so bad barometric pressure sensor problems that it is impossible to make any distance adjustments with that data. Of course I can't know how frequent this problem is, but I bought S70 about 3 weeks ago and immediately I noticed that PlaysLike distances were way off and the most predominant error source was wrong elevation data. First I thought there were elevation errors on the course data causing distance errors, but it was same on all courses I played. Then I noticed that barometric pressure was sharply doing about 3 mbar (meaning about 24 m altimeter) changes when I was sleeping at home. I contacted to the Garmin support and they agreed there was the problem in my S70. The retail store accept to change the device to the new one because I had it only few days and it was all the time same. So, now I have the second S70, but it behaves exactly same. PlaysLike are mostly unrealistic, because of altitude, and for example yesterday the altimeter was dropped during a golf round about 30 m. I mean the first tee box and the 18th green are close to each other at very same level, but the device showed the 18th green was at 30 m lower level. And the approach shot from about 150 m (again at very same level) to 18th green was even 15 m lower level. You can see location and altitude data synced at least Garmin Connect PC version. And the barometric pressure at night was changed suddenly about 2.6 mbar and the height of our flat (3rd floor) is now 0 m when it used to be 24 m. So, I would like to know if the all S70s are the same or if I just had bad luck.

  • Ya my air pressure is way off. It’s telling me right now to add 108 yards due to air pressure. So crazy. I have to leave plays like off. Would be nice to pick and choose what you want to affect it.

  • Calibrate the Altimeter sensor through the Sensors & Accessories settings menu.

Select Settings > Sensors & Accessories > Altimeter > Calibrate. Confirm the elevation for your location (you can use a reliable accurate source searching your zip code in Google) and use the "Enter Manually" option.

Manual calibration is more accurate compared to GPS. Calibration prior to starting the round will help with the barometric altimeter sensor assisting in calculating the PlaysLike Distance value.

You can also disable Wind and Weather through Golf Settings > PlaysLike menu, or set Home Conditions from that menu as well.

  • Got ya. I saw the auto calibrate and assumed it was doing it’s job. I’ll try manual, thanks for this tip. Is air pressure under the weather toggle then? I’ll just shut that off if it’s acting up.

  • I would recommend disabling weather, and still calibrating the altimeter sensor. I do not think either of those will affect pressure, but will confirm once I know 100%
