Incorrect distances

I have used the S70 for a few rounds at my home course, but the last two rounds the distances have been way off.

On one hole tee to green with my Z82 shows 324 yds but the watch is showing 227 yds.  As I get closer to the green the differences are less.  When I'm 80 yds out the watch shows 20 yds.  When I'm about 170 yds out the watch shows 120 yds.

I haven't received the new update yet but don't know if it will fix the issue.

  • Hi Cody, thank you for your response. I was measuring with my laser which also has slope. I understand the flag position can make the difference.  For example one situation. FMB on S70 showed 115/130/145 on one particular hole. Using the laser the flag was measured 95 and the flag was in the back. That is a huge difference.

I did notice later upon your suggestion I did notice the “home condition” setting had temp and humidity that was little off.

could that setting make that much of difference?

lastly, the home condition setting is not automatically set and we have to manually adjust every round?

  • The temp and humidity are both factored into the PlaysLike distance, so that in conjunction with the elevation for the course being played need to be correct for the feature to provide information accurately during the round.

Home conditions manually entered are set until changed...so the values would need to be adjusted as the weather changes when playing each time, as the humidity and temp will change day to day...or throughout the day. Altitude would really only change if the course being played is different.

  • I have more things to worry about in my game than making sure I check the temp and humidity at each tee box so I can get the correct plays like value.  It can be 60 degrees when I start the round and 90 when I finish the round.  If I have the golf app open why can't it make the appropriate changes to temp for me.  Having temp and humidity options for my Home course does not make sense then since they do change from minute to minute and day to day.  It seems to me that the Home Course settings should just be static information.  How does plays like get it's values then when I don't play at my home course since there is no settings for every course I play.  Not sure why I should be making manual changes to my watch when it can get some of the info from my phone.

  • I absolutely agree.  With the explanation given above, unless we make adjustments throughout the round regards to home condition then “plays like” feature is basically useless unless we make adjustments manually before every shot!!

If in fact that is the case regards to “plays like” feature it is best to not use as it can be drastically off.

thank you Cody trying to best explain the situation. this requirement that we as end user has to adjust manually every time to get the most accurate reading is hard to digest.

  • I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong or have incorrect setting?  If this is a wide known or a consistent problem many others would also comment and respond?!

  • If you keep your smartphone paired during the round, the change in weather and temp if you are starting out in the morning, and then playing into the afternoon would be adjusted accordingly throughout the round as long as the watch is syncing to the Garmin Golf app through your phone.

You can also remove wind and weather from factoring into the PlaysLike distance altogether, so if you do not want to factors contributing to the value, then you can simply turn them off. These are all additional options and settings allowing the user more control in using the PlaysLike Distance feature on the Approach S70.

  • hey good afternoon and thank you very much as usual for being responsive.

as we are going through the initial growing pains would you happen to have a checklist of either things we should check/do pre-round or a list of things to check when we start to notice issues during a round so we can give better feedback?

  • My responses in regards to the topic on this post, are simply to make users aware of the options...that way if there ever is a concern with distances, there's ways to better determine why they may be seeing a certain distance value during the round.

The Golf Settings on the watch will remain the same once set by the user, until the user decides to go into those settings and makes changes to them. So if PlaysLike settings are adjusted once, the user dues not have to make any changes unless they want to manually adjust the Home Conditions, or disable/enable wind and weather factor into the calculation.

PlaysLike Distance features were enhanced with the Approach S70 to give a more dynamic and realistic reading, as the weather and barometric altimeter sensor is used for the first time on this series to provide the reading.

The info I have included in this conversation is just to make S70 user's aware of the new way PlaysLike Distance works, as it is different compared to other devices offering slope-adjusted distances during the round.

  • Today I played at a course that's not my home course.  I did have the Garmin Golf app open and it was connected to my S70.  At one specific spot the normal distance to the center of the green was 192 yard.  When I changed to the Plays Like data it showed 232 yards. The slope showed +0, the Wind showed +6 (but it was actually calm), and the Weather showed +34.  It was around 85 degrees at this point.  I didn't trust the 232 yards and used the club I would use for the 192 yards and ended up just a couple of yards off.  Is there a way to see how the weather portion of the Plays Like is created? That seems to be the piece of info that is causing my Plays Like distances to be so far off.

  • I’m playing Sunday but this time I’m going to go in the home condition setting and adjust the temp to current temp of play. When I played 3 rounds before the home condition temp was 60 but actual temp was prolly around 70. So I’m thinking it didn’t make that much difference and so plays like was pretty good. But the last time I played the actually temp was about 25 degree difference. I’m wondering if that would make huge difference?!
