Screen Timeout

Had an on course lesson today and first time I've used the S70.

How do you get the screen to stay on? Kept dimming down and had to press the button to activate the screen.

Got the setting set to stay on but not working. My S62 stayed on.

  • S70 display is AMOLED.  The benefit is much brighter and vivid colors as well as more details.  The downside is it takes a lot of energy to keep it illuminated.  It's basically the same as on most of the newer devices including the Epix, FR965, and Venu 2+.

"Always On", doesn't mean "Always visible" unfortunately.  In bright light, which is pretty typical for many of us while golfing, it is impossible to see.  So until you tap the screen, or rotate your wrist to cause a "gesture" it appears to be off.

The Apple Watch started this trend to AMOLED, and in most situations, most people seem to prefer the brighter more vivid colors of AMOLED.

Personally, I prefer the old screens during sports since most of the time I'm in bright desert sunshine.  Fenix 7 still has the old style display.  Unfortunately it doesn't have all the new Golf features of the S70..

  • I must agree with stu1903 . the time it stays on seems very short despite setting to 15 secs . I would sacrifice battery life to have it on all the time.

  • The Approach S70 is designed to turn the display off after a specific period of time depending on the timeout selected in system settings, along with other factors depending on features used, and the screens actively being viewed.

Due to image persistence being a normal behavior with AMOLED display types, it is best to avoid displaying static images (like a watch face) at high brightness levels for long periods of time.

The Understanding the Always On Setting for an Approach S70 Watch Garmin Support page provides a specific explanation of the Always On setting for reference.

  • I hope you wont abandon the Transflective MIP displays in golf watches, they are perfect for the bright sunshine. Maybe not as cool once in the clubhouse but for the main purpose of the watch surely the MIP-display is better when it comes to visability instead of a backlit display that is trying to fight the sunshine. Wish there would be a Fenix 7X sized display in the Approach seriies.

  • Agreed.  This change in how the watch stays on almost makes it unusable for me.  I would highly recommend Garmin change it so we have the option of not having a timeout and having the watch actually “Always On” vs. not being always on.

Keeping the display on 100% and never dimming is much more concerning than decreased battery life. Golf is a long activity and if done several times a week, the life expectancy of S70 will be impacted dramatically.

  • i agree, i had a 62 great bit of kit..bit disappointed with screen turning off with the 70. wasnt expecting that and dont like it to the point might go back to the 62. i get why it does it but its not now a product that doesnt do what i want so its not fit for my needs etc. nice watch tho.

  • Maybe give a 30 second timeout option. Even the 15 second seems to cut out too quickly

  • Upgraded from S60.  First time out had to google how to keep the screen on.  Frustrating to find out you can't, which is a major hassle on the course.  Overall, several features now take extra button pushes which is a poor user experience.  Nice screen, but will be returning so I can focus on golf and not the watch.
