S70 first impression

Hi folks,

I received my S70 47mm last Friday and played already one round.

First impression is very good - particularly compared to the S60. Battery life is really good - it was over 80% after 18 holes. The display is a step change compared to everything I saw with a watch so far. Bright and high resolution.

New golf app is really good, however it would be good to allow customizing the swipe data screens. Still it shows only the puts per hole - why not the total number if shots per hole.

  • Hello.

So to me the new watch just looks like a very expensive disappointment. No offense to you.

It still has that bad 4 pin connector like the S60 or S62. Has Garmin never heard of magnetic plugs or induction? And why no common USB-C connector?

The display is already quite large at 47mm, but what good is that if the numbers are still tiny: Distances to obstacles or to a manually set layup position. Can't they be made bigger?
Some golfers need special glasses with which they can no longer read these tiny numbers on the wrist. Of course, the experts don't think about that.

  • All of our watches that feature a map showing the layout of each hole offer a large full screen view to make details on the course map larger, and the Approach S70 offers the option as well. The front, middle, and back distances displayed can also be increased in size using the big numbers feature.

The Approach S70 features Garmin's proprietary plug charger to a USB-C. Garmin's proprietary plug connector type is used on all of the other non-MARQ series wearable devices available in our current lineup of wearable smartwatch devices.

So @HorstW61, if you are looking for a golf-focused watch, that offers magnetic charging cable connector, I would recommend taking a look a look at the Golfer edition from the MARQ Gen 2 options. We developed an entirely different cable for MARQ Gen 2 Series, which currently is the only watch that features Garmin's magnetic charger to USB-C, and available to USB-A. Wireless charging is currently not offered on our devices, but may be at some point as we are always innovating new designs and products.

  • I do know what Front Middle and Back is. And big numbers. I had a S60 which I gave away.

Feel free to prove me wrong with the tiny digits. Please post 2 screenshots where I can see the distance to a hazard (bunker) and to a manually set layup (dogleg position or water). Make these numbers as big as possible.

I will print that to scale and will test. Thank you.

  • The numbers are still small and if you have a hard time reading up close, that might be an issue.  But the screen is the same size and resolution of the 51mm Epix Pro, despite being in a 47mm device.  It is definitely more readable than the S62.  I haven't been having any problems reading the screen despite generally needing reading glasses.  Each person will be different, so trying to give generalized opinion here for a device you haven't even used isn't great form.

  • You simply tap on the overhead view showing the full layout of hole the watch is currently on and it will zoom in.

If you have big numbers enabled, you would need to turn big numbers off...as the map next to the distances will not display for you to zoom in on the map if you have big numbers enabled.

  • I think he's referring to things like the hazards and target distances.  I doubt he's referring to the Font / Middle / Back numbers in the standard view.

These are screenshots from a S70 42mm (wife has my S70 47mm).  On the 47mm I have no problems reading these numbers out on course.  But sitting here, even the 42mm numbers look just fine.

Regardless, the graphics are so much more vivid and detailed on the S70 over the S62, until you've used one, you won't appreciate it.

  • For Garmin Cody:
Thanks for the nice reply, but that doesn't convince me. I need to see in advance what I will see on the golf round.
Off the course I wear varifocals with which I can read the watch perfectly. But I can't play golf with them. I can't hit a single ball (duffies, fat shots, whiffs, ...)
On the course, I wear fitted sunglasses for medium and long distances. But I can't read a watch with them. That's the dilemma.
I don't buy a watch to give it back after 1 round because I was right in my statement. Send me a free of charge watch in 47mm to test and convince me - and we'll talk more.

    For ekutter:
Exactly! It is about the distances to hazards and layups.
Thanks for the photos, but they don't help. I need to see the whole watch case (indicating the size, preferably the 47 mm variant) so I can print that to scale. I'll then make a paper watch and see what's going on. I did that with an image from Garmin 47 mm sample:

No chance to read this when it is on my wrist.

    Like to read more.

  • Clearly the watch is not suited for you, maybe a mobile device with an app would be better for your vision.

I have had the s6, and then s62, and now purchased the s70. Garmin watches are the best golf watch experience.

Thank Garmin Cody for being patient and responding to all the inquiries!

  • Yes, i can not use this watch. Could it be that "in real life" the numbers are a bit bigger than on the product image?

Why not bigger? Is that so hard to implement?

There's plenty of space on the screen.

    H.

  • The frustrating thing is, it could easily be suited to everyone if they just made that text a bit bigger, or gave you the option to do that. The big numbers feature is no use because the course disappears. There are quite a few people making this same complaint on other threads here. It’s unnecessarily small. Every other golf watch has bigger text in this area. I think the S70 is great but I sent mine back for the same reason as Horst.
