Inaccurate calorie count when using a golf cart.

Calorie count for activities when using a golf cart is hugely overestimated. It assumes that you are jogging that distance and calculates calories accordingly. Apple watch has the exact same problem.

I ride the golf cart from my tee shots to my second shots and in between holes if its a long distance. The rest of the time I walk (caddy drives cart). So I do walk roughly half the distance and I would like a calorie figure for it. I guess I just have to mentally half the figure reported by the watch and app...

  • The calories count during a round of golf is not a reflection of distance travelled throughout the round.

Regardless of whether distance travelled was walked, or if you drove a cart...the distance from the cart is not adding any additional calories as the activity. When you view the activity generated through the Garmin Connect mobile app after recording a round of golf, the activity does include distance for the total time of the round...but activity calories burned throughout a round of golf are a reflection of heart rate, and factors like steps (which are tracked from arm movement, not cart movement).

Since the activity type is golf, distance is simply a reflection of GPS location changing throughout the round...and is not crucial towards the specific activity like a Run activity, where pace and distance are more important data for the nature of a workout oriented activity type.

  • That may be the case and all that means is that the watch is counting bumps in the golf cart as steps, or some other problem is causing the inflated calorie count. The calorie count is inaccurately high as widely recorded from players using Garmin and apple watches, which you can find on google.

  • Garmin uses a variety of proprietary calculation methods in providing health data compared to other 3rd party companies.

The Approach S62 uses a gyroscope, and an accelerometer sensor to determine very specific arm movement per the angle of the wrist worn on setting in the User Profile menu of the watch. The watch has programming to help separate regular movement from step movement.

The activity calorie calculation during the round of golf will be primarily based on heart rate using First Beat Analytics. The other factors that contribute to the calculation include your user profile settings entered for the baseline, and specific to the activity type the user selects.

If you have concerns with the calories, I would recommend reviewing more info on the calorie calculation through the two Garmin support article links below:
