Are the average club distance stats taking into account every single shot including miss-hits and creative club useage?

Im sure its been said before, but I often need to use a low lofted club like a 4 iron to get out of danger or out from under trees. I also use mid irons like a 7 or 8 around the greens which are both completely different to my normal full swing shots which I think is effecting my average club distances and Watch Caddy suggestions.

Im not a perfect ball striker but any means and sometimes chunk, thin, shank or top the ball and I begrudgingly add the club I used to my stats but I worry it will bring down my normal hitting averages for that club. I also get incorrect club distance data when I hit trees even if I did hit the ball really well.
Does Garmin golf notice the super short shots from a normal club average and discount them as statistical outliers or does it average every shot from each club regardless?

To get around the problems above Ive had to make two ‘phantom clubs’ in the app for ‘miss-hits’ and ‘utility’ just to make sure it doesnt effect the average club stats.

If Garmin is averaging every shot, can we have a way (other than the workaround above) to tell the watch or app that the club was not used as a full swing (e.g. like a 4 iron 100 yard punch from under trees) or to register shots as miss-hits?

I really like that you can see in the app every shot on the map including if it was from the fairway, rough or in bunkers. But it would be great if we could also add shot types like bump and run, punch etc. then the app knows these shots shouldnt be used for club average distance and also you can go back and see how well your recovery or other short game shots were.

  • You can add a club called "bump and runs" or "rescue shots".  I've done this to avoid muddling my averages for intentionally off average shots.  Only downside is that you have to be aware of what kind of club you called it when it shows up in Virtual Caddy.

For miss-hits, I don't select a club out of my bag when I take the shot and the app will use a generic club instead for the shot when the following shot is taken.  Even if you select a club, you can go into the app and shots for the round and deselect the club you entered on the watch.  I do this for my horrible D shots.  When you go to look at the averages, you can filter by club.  With D for instance, you then exclude that "bad" generic club that has all the bad shots assigned to it, and you can see what your Real D is really doing.

    • Garmin doesn’t give a flip about whether these golf watch’s work or not. Sold both of mine and just the lose of aggravation I picked up 3 strokes off my handicap. Garmin support SUCKS!!!
  • Thanks for the suggestion.  I am going to do the same thing.

  • Just don't choose a club after hitting a bad shot, press return instead. The shot will still show up on the map afterwards, but with no club assigned to it. And I guess it wouldn't mess up average length calculation on any club since it doesn't know which club to assign it to.

  • Unfortunately this won’t work with the Ct10 Sensors….

  • I think if you do this off the tee, it still shows up for your driving average but just under ‘unknown’ club. Might still work for other shots without a problem. I’ll give it a try

  • Garmin needs tomake it easier to bulk delete/edit shot lengths for each club. The shot distance summary is completely inaccurate for flubbed, missed, and erroneous shots recoerfed.  Go here to Garmin's Idea Suggestion form. If enough do this , maybe change can happen ? www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/
