Upgrading for putting stats

Hi, I currently have a Vivoactive 3 that I absolutely love for golf. The auto shot tracking works great and I really don't mind entering clubs used after the round is finish. But I know I'm missing out on putting stats, and I'm hoping getting the S62 would resolve this.

Does the S62 allow you to record gps locations of putts and where the flag location is? (you would think a simple button press would suffice as it can tell when I'm on the green.) Or do I have to buy the CT10 sensors as well?

Much thanks!

  • To be honest, the only useful stats you can get are the number of putts per hole.  I have the CT10 sensor attached to the putter (not attached to any other clubs) and it just helps in entering the correct score.  It does help improve the distance accuracy recorded for the approach shot and also I do have putting distances displayed although that is to the default pin position as I cannot be bothered to adjust the pin position on the watch.

  • Really? That is quite surprising that there isn't an option to get accurate putting stats. I used to carry my phone with me and set locations with the Golf Pad app, and it had no problem setting location of pin. I swapped to a watch because I hated having my phone on at all times.

I guess there's not much point in upgrading.

    Thanks for your reply

  • Don't get me wrong, you can adjust the position of the flag on the watch and I am sure that the putting distances will be measured accurately, particularly when using a CT10, it is just that I am not interested in that particular metric.  I do use the watch to get average shot distances for each club and I do use the stats to record number of shots and putts per hole, I just don't use it to record distance of putts.

Whilst the watch does record useful data, the software on the Garmin Connect website is extremely limited in that you can't sort data by date or season etc.  The S62 is an excellent watch but I don't think it will give the level of stats that you seem to be looking for.

  • Ok that's good to know. I understand after each shot it gives you the opportunity to enter the club used, unlike my Vivoactive 3? As long as the putter is an option and setting the flag position is an option, I think it would be perfect. Or is there something I'm missing? I almost feel like the CT10 would be useless.

Thanks again for these replies  very helpful.

  • If you have the CT10 on all your clubs then it will include the distances for all your clubs including the bad ones and short chips etc; personally, I find it better to just have one on the putter.  This way, when I walk off the green, it has usually counted all the shots I have taken to then enter in the scorecard.  For example, on a Par 4, if I have taken 5 shots then the watch will show 5 and I just need to enter the number of putts and penalties.  Without the CT10, it will usually default to 4.  Only a minor thing but it does speed the score entry up a fraction.

Yes, setting up the flag is an option for each green, that way the distances shown on the watch will be to the flag rather than the middle of the green; front and back remain unchanged.  I don't use that function as I use a Bushnell laser for distances to the flag.

  • I find the putting stats frustrating, I can't understand why stats cannot be produced when you manually enter for each hole? I then added a sensor and at times it will add phantom putts and you can't adjust after the round? Can't see why you can add or delete any shot but not a putt? Had multiple questions sent to Garmin and unfortunately can't get an answer.

Pity because I love all other aspects of the watch.

  • I've never seen documentation or a posting from Garmin saying that moving the flag around makes any difference in putt data. Yet people post here like it is a fact.

Is there any proof that moving a flag on my watch makes any difference in approach or putting data? Please share.

  • From the manual with the relevant bit highlighted by me:

    Viewing the Green

While playing a round, you can take a closer look at the green and move the pin to get a more precise distance measurement.

    1. Press the action button.
    2. Select Move Flag.
    3. Tap or drag  to move the pin location.

The distances on the hole view screen are updated to reflect the new pin location. The pin location is saved for only the current round.

  • Mick, if you have Stat Tracking selected on in the settings you can change the number of putts taken but I an not sure if this changes what is shown on the graphic of the hole.

  • Ok. So I'm familiar with this. It will help get a more precise distance to the flag.

Do you think moving the flag location gets used by putting stats? Seems from the documentation that this is just for precise distance on approach shots, then forgotten.

I don't move the flag location because I assumed there was no value to the statistics being collected.
