Lost Ball / OOB

What is the correct way to register a lost ball or out of bounds?

Say I hit my driver as my tee shot, and it might be lost, so I hit a provisional. Even though I select Driver for both shots, in the Garmin golf app when later reviewing the round, only one drive shot is registered for this particular hole.

If I manually add another tee shot (by manually setting it's locations to the tee) and tagging the end result as either Lost ball or out of bounds, the distance of that shot is set to like 1m, since it then uses the next(actual) tee shot as the second shot, if though I set it as oob/lost.

In the statistics it will then show a 1 meter driver.

I can't figure out what the designed way to handle these situations are?

  • You don't manually add another shot, you need to give yourself 1 penalty stroke for the hole. Since you didn't find that first drive you're only going to record the distance on your found ball. It's impossible to tell how far an OB ball goes most of the time unless you can see it from the tee box and shoot it with a laser but even then who cares.

  • Yes I get that it's not possible to know the distance of a ball that goes out of bounds or is lost. However, in the Garmin app and web, you can set the "End result" of each shot with the following options: "In Play", "Lost Ball", "Unplayable" and "Out of bounds". What would be the purpose of those??

I do add penalty shots in these situations. However, going back and reviewing the hole in the app/web, it looks like the hole was played fine with no misshots.

While viewing the shot overview for my drives, I can see 1 red ball outside of the field among all those white balls. I think I once managed to mark a ball OOB and it would show correctly when viewing that hole later, but can't remember how I did that.

Also, adding 1 penalty shot still leaves it 1 shot short, since an oob from the tee would result you taking your third shot on the next shot. Say I play a par 4, hit my driver OOB and re-hit the Tee shot and make par on the second tee shot. The S62 will disregard the first shot (will think it was a precise shot?), and even with 1 penalty shot the total number of strokes would be 5, but should be 6.

I think both shots should appear on the tee from the same location, where the first should be marked as OOB. That would show 5 shots with 1 penalty in the example above, and would be correct.

  • In the Garmin Connect Web app I usually mark the drive OB and it will register the second shot from where you hit your provisional or took a drop. I'm not sure how that works into your stats but that's what i've been doing.
