How to use Handicap index / Slope Garmin S62 (Sweden)

Hi,

I cannot understand how to use this slope in my S62. It always shows wrong score after my rounds. I use this watch in Sweden that has special slope for every course. I assume that the watch do not have that slope build-in in the watch. But how do I manually enter the correct info ?

I have settings for Stableford enabled on my watch.

When finding the course, I choose to calculate Stableford, choosing correct Yellow Tee. But there always turns out wrong.

There are settings in the watch for Handicap :

Settings > Golf Settings > Handicap Scoring

* Local Handicap (Here I can only enter full numbers without decimals)

* Index/Slope (Here I can enter numbers with decimals)

And then there is a setting that is not in the manual :

* Enter Handicap (Here I can only enter full numbers without decimals)

So for example, I have a Handicap for 13,2 HCP and I am going to play a course (Brollsta GK) that has index/slope that gives me 16 shots. What should I manually enter in Each of theese 3 menu ?

  • Local and Slope is probably just a selection between either of the two but the watch brings you to the enter handicap screen so you can double check that its correct or change it if its wrong. Atleast that is how the S60 works.

If if your Handicap Scoring been set to Index your Enter Handcap will accept no decimals.
If your Handicap Scoring been set to Slope, your Enter Handicap setting will accept decimals.

  • Ok but I do not really understand actually. At what menu should I enter my own HCP 13,2 and in what menu should I enter the course index .. in my case today 16, so 2,8 shots more than my HCP.

Is it just me or is this hard to understand how I should enter all settings for this to be correct.

The watch calculated today’s round 4 point to many. I got 33 points and the watch showed 37 points.

  • Unfortunately we're still waiting for Garmin to address WHS. It's not easy as countries still have different systems and many courses don't have the new lookup tables on the course database. I've asked for an enter course handicap option as you start a round but nothing so far.

  • I think you are making it harder than it is.

You dont really enter both of them, either you select Local and then enter 16, or you select Index/Slope and enter 13.2

The Enter Handicap menu is then used when you want update:

       A) The number of strokes  (if setting is Local)
       or
       B) Your exact handicap (if setting is Index/Slope).

I would suggest using the Local Method to rule out any chance of Garmin storing the incorrect data for that golf course.
When  using the Local Method, don't forget to change the number of strokes when you play from a different tee.

  • Always on home course and social golf maybe but if you travel or play competitions off reduced handicap you should not have to go into the main menu endlessly. You should be able to enter a change to whatever the watch thinks.

Have Garmin mapped each European course for Index/slope correctly as all we see is Mens/Ladies tee and not tee colour? The UK uses a different calculation as well.

I just think you should enter your exact handicap in the golf menu and then enter the correction when you play as part of the round start menu. For example, ideally the watch knows I am 13.6 and then I would adjust to 14 for home course yellow, 15 for home course white, something else for an away course or even reduced to have 95% handicap for a comp.

At the moment it doesn't work.

  • Ok thanks for the update.

So then I will try use the Local Method .. enter the numbers of strokes that I get from the Index for that specific course (as per yesterday 16 strokes).

Then I don´t need to enter my actual HCP in any menu If I understand you right, only press yes to calculate Stableford and what Tee I am playing from when I start a round right ?

Because the Garmin Golf app seems to have stored my Actual HCP and I don´t understand where it comes from. Yesterday I hade 16 entered in Index/Slope and also Local setting, but Garmin golf has my Actual 13,2 HCP stored when I open it.

Cannot find that setting in the watch .. nor in the Garmin Golf app.

  • Don't know impact for non-North America courses but the entries are intended to work this way:

    • Scoring Method - choose Stroke Play or Stableford
    • Handicap Scoring - Choose Off/Local Handicap/Index Slope
    • Set Handicap - If you chose Local Handicap above then enter the Specific Course Handicap (# of strokes) you have for the tees you are using.  If you chose Index/Slope then enter your Handicap Index (this will include decimals); this is the number that you obtain from the website of your Golf Association.  Don't know what effect Off has.

If Garmin has correctly updated the Index/Slope and TeeBox info for your course and you have entered your Handicap Index the watch is supposed to calculate the correct number of strokes based on the combination of Course Info, Index/Slope and Handicap Index - this seems to be working fine for the North American courses.

For the many other courses around the world it doesn't seem like the Garmin course database they upload into watch has caught up with much of the WHS data yet.  In those cases I would recommend you set Handicap Scoring to Local Handicap, enter in what you know as your actual Course Handicap value - the results may still be wrong though if the watch doesn't have the accurate teebox info.

I agree Garmin needs to work a little quicker at getting their worldwide course database updated with current info.

  • Ok thanks for your explanation. I will test the Local Handicap settings tomorrow. I checked the course slope and I get 14 shots so I will enter 14 to the Local setting.

What about how to enter my own actual HCP, my Garmin Golf seems to have that when I check but I do not now from what menu it sync’s this from the watch. Just curious because this could change from round to round.
