Approach S62 gesture not working when paired

Hi. I just got my S62 today. I've noticed that gesture to turn on back light doesn't work.

I saw some posts here that suggest resetting the watch and not pairing it with the phone. Although those suggestions were for a different model.

I tried that and lo and behold it does enable gesture to work. But what good is this golf gps unpaired with the phone? As soon as I pair my watch to my phone. It doesn't work anymore.

Is this a bug? Is there a fix to this? A setting that I need to check?

My fw version is 2.50 out of the box.

My watch is a week old...gestures work just fine. I wear my watch on left wrist. When i roll it toward me as if I want to see the time, it will illuminate just fine i've also turned my brightness up to like 80% and don't see a dramatic impact on battery life.
