S62 Plus CT10 for Putter?

So, I couldn't stand having the competitor's club tags, clip-on device, and phone app all charged, updated, and running.  More than once I got to the club and realized I switched clubs but didn't remember to switch tags.  Thus, I was happy to switch to the S62.  I like just taking the watch and typing everything into one device.  What I didn't realize was the lack of putting detail.  I'm ok with not having in-depth putting stats, but my question is whether or not the S62 measures approach shots to the center of the green or is it registering my putts and adjusting accordingly and how can I tell?  More to the point of the topic, would adding one CT10 on the putter improve the fidelity of my approach shots by ensuring it has a better coordinates for the end point?  Thanks in advance.

  • I've yet to see a very clear explanation from Garmin how approach shots are calculated.

Based on this forums, best guess is center of the green but just a guess. I don't think any user knows for sure how this is calculated.

The question is "Does Garmin know how it is calculated?" Slight smile

If the CT10 doesn't bother you, I'd say use it. It might be helping in the calculation. Maybe.

And if they ever improve the statistics that history of using the CT10 might be beneficial. But again, a big maybe.

  • Yes, a CT10 on the putter is good for improving the end location of your approach shots. I use it for exactly that.

Keep in mind if you don't change the pin locations, you'll just have a location on the green with the assumption that the pin is in the center. So for strokes gained approach, the ending distance will be to the middle of the green regardless of where the pin is.

  • Thanks for the responses.  I think one thing that would be helpful is an easier way to update the flag locations, which would make the approach and putting stats really solid if you had just the watch and one CT-10 for the putter.

  • Pin position is always center of green. You can't record correct pin position and because of this approach shot, short game and putting statistics are rubbish. And seems that Garmin is not interested to develop this feature.

  • You can change the position of the flag.  During a round, press the red button and it will give you the option to move the flag.  Click on the green the approximate position of the flag for the day and you will see the distances change accordingly.  If you don't move the flag then the distances will be to the default flag location which is middle of the green.

Using the CT10 won't give you more accurate distances to the green but will give better data on the length of putts taken.  The best function of the CT10 on your putter is that it is better at recognising that you have finished a hole and changing to the next one, the number of shots taken is normally correct as well and doesn't need adjusting like it does when you don't use the CT10.

  • Thanks for the insights.  Looks like there's consensus that a CT-10 on the putter and moving the flag location can help improve the quality of the data gathered.

  • Well, there are certainly lots of opinions on this. To me, it is just guesses if it helps or not.

The question should be for Chris at Garmin. Maybe he can answer with a quick YES or NO. Scanning through the forum, I've never seen a confirmation from Garmin. Some users say it helps, some say it does nothing.

I believe it does nothing but that is just an opinion.

    Chris,

    1. Does moving the pin on my watch have any impact on statistics gathered by Garmin? Will it improve data on putting that Garmin collects and then presents back to the user?

    if YES

    2. Please explain with examples how this would work.

  • So, for years a simple method to mark the flag with gps technology has been requested, with countless people supporting and requesting it, but still nothing done by Garmin to implement this simple change. Unbelievable!!

  • Marking the flag placement with GPS is currently not a possible option, as Garmin has not no control over the possibility of this feature being offered.

The flag position changes daily, and courses manage where the flag is moved, along with how they report the flag placement each day. It is also not feasible currently for all 42,000+ courses we offer to make this information to be readily available for updating to our course maps.

You can make the adjustment manually through the green view based on where the flag is located for that day with a Garmin golf compatible device, or we offer the Approach Z82 to laser the distance directly to the flag for that day.

  • Cody, you are misunderstanding. I think the suggestion being made is having the "green view" leverage GPS/CT10 to place the pin instead of fiddling with the watch. As in: "I'm taking the ball out of the hole, the pin is here use my GPS location" in one action.... instead of "Click, scroll, click, scroll, toggle toggle" until you find the closest preset location and spending 30 seconds on the watch.

Nobody is suggesting you try to poll courses for where their pin is daily. That's ridiculous.
