Chips, putts, bunker play and trees - do I need separate clubs in my list? Approaches and chips.

I've only played 3 rounds with my new Approach S62 and I think it's brilliant. I don't have the CT10 buttons though.

Should I bother with adding on additional clubs on my list to tap on them as shots after hitting balls that aren't from fairways and aren't full shots? At the moment I have a huge list - Driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, Mishit, 4 iron, 4 iron trees, 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron, 7 iron trees, 8 iron, 8 iron trees, Pitching Wedge, PW pitch, Gap wedge, GW chip, GW pitch, 54, 54 bunker, 54 chip, 58, 58 bunker, 54 chip, Scotty Cameron.

I've done that so that I can get a more accurate average length of clubs as currently the Garmin uses all shots played. So if I'm playing a chip out of the trees (as per usual) with the 4 iron then that distance is factored in and therefore lowers the average distance. Does that make sense or am I totally doing this wrong?

If I'm not then that seems crazy to me. I did have a Shot Scope watch with the buttons you screw in the handle like the CT10s. The Shot Scope had a few features that I think would be great with the Approach S62 and would mean you didn't need to have that great big list:

     - Club distances - Average distance, Performance average (outliers are removed  if you hit it fat or hit a tree or get a flier - eg. I had an 184 metre 7 iron with a strong wind behind me today. I can guarantee I hit 155 metres at best! So that average on Garmin Golf has been blown out by that outlier.), Longest, Usage.

     - Approaches - automatically works out if it is an approach (outside 50 metres). I think Garmin does this but it's not as user friendly.

     - Short game - automatically works out if it is a chip or whatnot (inside 50 metres). Not sure if Garmin does this.

     - Pin location - when you took your ball out of the hole you tapped a button on the S62 to get the pin placement accurate. But if you don't have a CT10 button in your putter I guess that doesn't matter.

Now while it may seem like I wish I still had my Shot Scope, it was the V2 and it was like having a house brick on your wrist. And I found that too many stats were a rabbit hole I didn't want to go down. I didn't need a watch to tell me how poorly I was playing!! So I sold it to a friend.

I liked the look of the Approach S62 (despite it being twice the price of the Shot Scope V3) so pulled the trigger after so many positive reviews. Love the idea of the Virtual Caddie, Pin Pointer, Wind, etc. But I think for the price, it should be easier to get your distance averages closer to what they are and there should be more useful stats available.

Hope that all makes sense.

I had the same thoughts too - so I just added a club I’ve named Other’ to the list and use this for any shots that I don’t want to register against the actual club (duffs, chips etc). I’m not sure this is the best way around it but it works for me

  • While it’s my understanding that the S62 accounts for approaches/chips/bunkers, I did what you did because why not.

I made a club for all my actual clubs, then separate clubs for:

    - Partial wedge

    - Bump and run

    - Punch out

    - Mishit

  • Silly question, but does one leave the club assignment blank for ”extra clubs” created? E.g. If I create a club for ”punch”, should I assign 5 iron to it or not? I don’t care too much about distance on these recovery shots.

  • Pin location - when you took your ball out of the hole you tapped a button on the S62 to get the pin placement accurate. But if you don't have a CT10 button in your putter I guess that doesn't matter.

    Hey SteveOL,

old topic, I know, but let me ask one question: what do you mean with that sentence? Is this your suggestion to Garmin to implement such a function or is it fact that you can define the "exact" pin position by pressing a button? I don't know that the S62 would do so, but if that is possible please let me know!

I think we can agree that dragging a virtual pin on a touch screen with ~30mm diameter is not really appropriate.

Frankly speaking from my point of view there is too less information / instructional videos available that show and explain quite detailed about all the golf functionalities for the S62 (just my 2cents). Or are there information (YouTube tutorials etc) and I did not find them? If so, please let me also know with some URLs.

  • With a ShotScope watch, after you holed out with the putter you picked up the ball out of the hole then whilst standing next to flag you could tap “Pin” (I think it was) and it would record the exact position of the pin. So you then knew where you took your putts relative to the flag position. Surely big old Garmin could do this?
