You can do this only when you play a round. When you see the basic screen of a hole (3 distances and the layout) push the action button (red), choose pencil, push the menue button and you see PAR and stroke index. Both can be changed if needed.
In the App you can not do this. Or i did not see how :(
When you play Stableford, you have the dots indicating how many strokes you have extra for each hole. Only when that's not correct you have to change the stroke index. I hope the changes are stored in the device. So you have to do it only one time for each golf course, until the next course update comes.
Advice: send a report to garmin: www8.garmin.com/cartography/forms/golfcourse.jsp With a little luck you will see the correct stroke index after the next update.
1. The screen is plenty big enough to display the SI. 2. The SI is essential when playing match play as to where strokes are given or received 3. Difficult to think of too many occasions when I would need to change the par or SI of a hole - would expect a course update to do that for me.
OK. Now it's match play and not stableford. Why didn't you mention that in your opening post? The S60 is not designed for match play. And i think it is a 1 player device only. Even if you choose scoring for 2 players, you can only add 1 handicap - or i do not know how to set a 2nd handicap.
Based on this the stroke index would be helpful :o
Your original answer was most helpful, but I think you are misunderstanding my comments.
I am talking about the display of information, not the scoring function which I seldom use. The Stroke Index of a hole is an essential piece of information in a competitive situation and having it tucked away makes little sense. If scoring is turned off, which it usually is for me as I don't need or want it most of the time, the "stableford dots" do not appear.
The only reason I mentioned stableford was to demonstrate that the watch clearly knows the SI but Garmin chooses to hide it away - it should be on the main screen (with a software switch to turn it off if you like)
Stroke Index & Matchplay Index are completely different things. Stroke index, indicates a rating of 1 to 18 an order of hardest to easiest on the course, and indicates who get shots on a hole for scoring of stableford or par. Matchplay index is a universal index. It is the same on every golf course in the world. eg. Hole No. 8 is matchplay index 1.
Stroke index and matchplay index could be the same. That depends on the course.
There's a standard match play index that most courses have adopted. It goes (in order from the first hole) 18, 8, 12, 3, 14, 6, 10, 1, 16, 5, 11, 2, 15, 7, 13, 4, 17, 9. The idea is to spread strokes given evenly. There are still courses that use their Stableford index as the Match Play index, so this will be specific to the course.
