This is not typical behavior, as the watch is water resistant up to 5ATM. Rain falling down onto the device should not have a cause and effect method of initiating a physical response resulting in the watch powering off.
I recommend taking a short video showing the behavior if this is something you can consistently replicate. Then please contact Garmin Support so they can retrieve the video to get a better idea of the concern you are describing.
