S42 Bricked after update

I have a 3 year old lightly used S42 watch that will not go past the green triangle screen after updated on 6/26/24. There was an issue during the update where garmin express installed the software but errored out on the course updates. I retried the install a few times without unplugging the watch without success. Once I unplugged the watch and rebooted the computer the watch wouldn’t fully turn on. It goes to the green triangle and then shuts down. Any help would be appreciated!

  • first time using it yesterday and It could not pick up any golf courses in the area. Supposed to come with 42k pre downloaded course. Tried shutting off and even reset to default settings. It pairs with both garmin connect and garmin golf without any issues. Any suggestions?

  • Install updates per the steps outlined on the Garmin Support page linked here: Update Golf Courses and Device Software on an Approach Golf Device 

    The course map updates can only be installed through a corded connection using Garmin Express for the Approach S42, so if you have not installed them before it is recommended to update. 

    If you continue to have concerns with the the watch finding nearby courses, please contact Garmin Support to discuss the concern further and a golf specialist can further determine solutions for you going forward. 

  • I have a lightly used S42 watch that will not even show the green triangle.  The screen is showing lots of lines and nothing else; won't charge, boot up.  My husband has 2 different model Garmin watches and both work great.  He purchased the first around 2019 (Tactical) and another around 2020  (Fenix 6).  Both are still working fine.  I'm sad that my Approach S42 didn't last as long.  I'm hearing that plenty of others are having issues with Approaches as well.
