Technology Question

My brother has an S20 (I assume that the S12 is a similar device). As he describes things this device senses and records every full shot that he takes. He does not have any club sensors so it does not know what club he is hitting. But if he hits a 4 iron from the middle of the fairway on the 4th hole this shot will get recorded and can be part of the round data that he can upload to Garmin Connect (or whatever). As shots get 'smaller' (chip shots, putts, etc) it becomes less reliable but full shots seem to work pretty darn well as he describes things. AND it does not detect practice swings somehow. 

What technology is Garmin using to detect these swings and is it the same technology across the entire Approach line from the S12 up to the S70?

  • The Garmin Golf products that offer the AutoShot feature, allow for automatic shot detection for all full swing shots during the round. The AutoShot feature requires scoring to be enabled, and the shot data is saved to the scorecard to view through the Garmin Golf app or the Garmin Connect website. 

    The Approach S12 does not offer the AutoShot tracking feature with just the watch itself like the Approach S20 has...however, the Approach S12 is compatible with offering shot detection with the Approach CT-10 club tracking sensors paired to the watch, and attached to the grip ends of the golf clubs being used. This also means that the Approach S12 also does not offer step tracking or the basic sleep tracking features that were offered on the Approach S20. 

    The button operation and location is identical between the Approach S12 and the Approach S20, and the menu layout is also similar between the two devices. 

    AutoShot utilizes the Accelerometer sensor and the Gyroscope, in conjunction with the wrist preference set in the User Profile menu of the Garmin Golf products compatible with the shot detection. The movement of the backswing per the wrist worn on setting, and impact of the club face hitting the ball for full swing shots allow for AutoShot compatible devices to detect the swing, and GPS distance from the shot location is then measured up to the point of the next shot that is detected...which stops tracking distance from the initial shot, and then begins tracking the distance of the next.
