Just got my R50 today and have some issues with ball flight and carry algorithm.

So here’s a few examples compared to the flight scope shot analysis website which is considered very accurate IMO.

the ball flight here shows a push fade and it’s clearly a push draw and shows as much on the flight scope photo.

Another one where the carry should be around 180-183 and it’s 165 ish yards. From a fairway at sea level and flat so no penalties and no uphill to knock the distance down .

what’s the deal here? Just a terrible algorithm from Garmin or an issue with alignment or what? I still have my Uneekor QED and have to decide what to do with the R50 in a short amount of time.

also this is just with ball data mode on no club data. I just got the machine this afternoon and wanted to hit some balls quick and check out some features.

  • you are right, the r50 overstated the carry distance in general. It is expected that with strong head wind the real world carry distances will be shorter than without head wind. As the r50 doesn't correct for head wind it will report larger carry distances in that case. In the final conclusions he made an error and and should have said that in real world distances are shorter in case of head wind. But in any case the r50 doesn't report to short distances and assuming the bigger deviations are head wind related and takes these out than accuracy seems acceptable. At least for his r50. It doesn't exclude that there r50's that are less accurate.

  • Something knocked that ball down with 123 ball speed and that height. Weather conditions in the settings can do this. Initial ball speed might be high but the algorithm could take setting conditions and change what you would normally see.

Your 95 yard shot on the range is more accurate.

I set my temps in the settings around 80 degrees and have set them to 45 degrees just to get an idea what distance I will be losing in the colder temps. It’s not perfect because the ball I’m using indoor is always 70 degrees. Wedges don’t show much change. 8i and lower I start to see the drop in distance.

  • Our team is currently reviewing this concern.  I have sent you an email to collect additional information to aid in our investigation.

  • I ran my Uneekor and Garmin R50 at the same time today for the first time and iron shots were bang on . Driver avg was 151.1 with the Uneekor and 149.5 on R50, so a few mph slower but not enough for me to really care all that much. Backspin was spot on on almost every shot as well. Only thing that was different and sometimes a lot was the sidespin. I'd have 200L on Uneekor and 650L on Garmin on the same shot for example. I saved the sessions on both to take a look at later for some bigger examples, just haven't got to it yet. Overall the last couple times out it's been great and no complaints.

  • Maybe something changed in the settings, who knows. I haven't had an issue the last few times out with the machine and even did a direct comparison this morning with the Uneekor QED which I have found to be very accurate over the last 5 years for me. Something was weirdly off the other day when i couldn't crack 140 ball speed with driver. and today again no issues, I saw as high as 155 and averaged 151.1 on uneekor and 149.5 on Garmin when i did a quick test of the 2 machines at the same time.

  • Foresight GC3 and R50 also have similar averages after a week of hitting balls. You can’t directly test next to each other but the averages come out very close. Backspin was very close and sidespin had some discrepancies. Not huge amounts but further off than backspin numbers.

R50 had higher sidespin numbers overall. You would have to be outside to see actual ball flight and offline differences. Just about impossible to do, so this is where you would have a radar based unit seeing the actual ball and comparing it to either GC3 or R50. Testing in zero wind is a must.

Home Tee Hero may have some discrepancies compared to the range but I’m not sure. I have seen issues hitting downhill and it was the same carry as flat. Not a lot of testing on this though since I use GSPro mainly.

  • Looks like your spin is pretty high...I have the same issue with mine. I get whack spin rates all the time on mine...I have a pic of 15K spin on a nutted driver shot straight down the middle of the fairway!

  • I haven’t had an issue with driver spin to be honest. What I posted was a 5 or 6 iron shot and a wedge shot . Driver seems pretty good except I’ve seen some 4000 side spin with 700 backspin crazy misreads . Probably happened about 2 times out of 200 shots with driver so far though.
