Inaccurate Ball Flights

I have noticed several time where the ball flight does not match the data that is shown in the system. For example see the image:   The characteristics of a in to out path and a closed face to path means this should be a push draw, basically starting out to the right and move left. This typically happens with the driver/3 wood. Thanks for looking into this

  • I can't believe some of these comments making this way more difficult than it is.   It is simple ball flight laws / physics, and the commenter is correct that this is backwards.   I've noticed the same thing on the built in range (not GS Pro).   For right handers, if the club is pointed more left than the path, it should draw.  In this example his swing is 3.6 degrees to the right of center, but his face is only 1.5 to the right of center.  This should have been a push draw.   I will say this, though.... I expect the ball data is correct but the club measurements are wrong.  I play on this machine regularly with PLUS handicaps (elite players) who agree with me and know their metrics from countless hours on GC3 and/or trackmans.  I expect the ball flight is being calculated based on ball dynamics, not the club measurements...it must be, or how would it measure things with no club data with no stickers?   This is why I personally believe that the R50 is incorrectly measuring club data, but I trust the ball data (including flights).

  • Spot on comment here.   Ball data appears accurate, just question accuracy of club data.

  • After more use and closer examination of of the impact video, I was able to determine, at least in my case, that I have at least a 2-3 degrees Toe-Down Dynamic Lie Angle. I tend to hit fades more often then not and I've booked a Fitting session for the weekend but all that is to say Dynamic Lie Angle also does not appear to be a field not captured by the R50 which can cause even accurate Club data to result in the issue here

  • I am so glad I came across this post. I thought I was going crazy. Been working my socks off this last month with my R50 - especially with my driver and mini driver. I have a consistent 2-4 degree in to out path. Working on my face to be open to the right 1 to 2 degree.  When I strike in center of the face - ball starts right and then balloons way right. So annoying . Go to the course - beautiful draw every time. So glad to know. that there is an issue with ball flight with others as well. No issues with wedges and irons with regards to ball flight. Please Garmin - fix this. I hate to move out of their ecosystem

  • Can't you hit shots with both running at the same time? I'd love to see a 10 shot breakdown with numbers explaining the differences in ball data. 5 drivers and 5 7 irons or something. I've seen quite a few people have zero issues with the R50 so I'm wondering if there are some bad units out there or what...

  • The side spin is creating the shot shape shown, not the club/face path. It quite simply a miss hit off the wrong part of the face which has caused it, nothing more, and your seeing it likely with either driver or fairway woods due to club faces not being flat like an iron.

  • Everytime I either hit a draw or pull one(right handed) I see either a slight IO path with a negative face to path. If I’m IO with open face to path the ball starts a little right then fades more right which is correct.

Take the unit outside and the display will show pretty much the same ball flight. It can misread a shot but it’s rare on mine.

Face to path showing closed to club path will result in a ball wanting to come back left for right handed players. It just depends on how much it’s closed relative to club path.

So 2 degrees open path with 4 degrees closed face to path will start to get the ball coming back left. Has to be a fairly centered strike with driver or 3 wood. You can get some different spin with these clubs if you hit in the toe or heal regardless of face angle.

R50 will pick up the spin of the ball very well with its cameras.

Club data might be off at times but I don’t see it a lot. I notice more with ball data when I get ball marks building up on the club face. It’s super important to keep the face and ball clean.

  • Update to my post from above:

I cleaned the glass panel of the R50. It had accumulated quite a bit of dust. Did a driver session and the ball flight matches my face angle, path and strike location. lesson learned - clean the glass panel frequently.

  • This is just really getting frustrating with the driver and 3 wood. I've never sliced the ball like this. I am a 5 handicap, so a decent player. My tendencies are hooks as your can tell from my path and face. It happens on both the GSPro and Garmin applications. An inside to out path with a closed club face to path does not slice. I am getting to the point of returning this unit. It is becoming a problem when this thread is the second most viewed on the forum. Can I please get someone from Garmin to help with this issue?

  • Again, on the first image you have 2000 side soin so it’s clearly a miss hit, ie not centre.

for the second image your club path is in to out, but you’ve closed the flame down which is causing the ball to go further left. If the face was open, but to a lesser degree than the path then you’d expect a draw.

it is however driver and the curved face of this club means I’m the ball can react differently due to gearing.

You may well be a good player, but that doesn’t mean the launch monitor is incorrect. You’re an amateur and we miss centre quite a lot. It could be made worse if the launch monitor is aligned perfectly obviously.
