Understanding Distance Measurement

R50 Version: 4.30

GLM Version: 3.10.0

Unity Version: 2.19.0.146

In Home Tee Hero with various and multiple courses:

1. Using the R50 at an outdoor range with well-known and distance verified markers,

2. Hit a shot from the fairway in a Home Tee Hero course--note there is *no "rough" or "sand" penalty* with the shot,

3. Witness the ball fly (carry) *over* the 150 yard marker on the outdoor range,

4. Home Tee Hero calculates the shot distance of "136 yards" total.

Why does this happen? I have experienced this distance anomaly on many occasions and have witnessed similar discrepancies using the R50 "Practice" module.

In an indoor, into the net situation--there's no other evidence of how far the ball flies (carries in the air). At an outdoor range, the actual carry distance is easy to verify and compare to the R50 calculated distance.

Please advise.

  • There are several threads which bring up this same issue. Unfortunately they all dry up without a solution or admittance of a problem by Garmin. I wish you luck. i returned mine....

  • Just want to add that I am having the same problem. I have only hit inside with mine, but I also own a GC3 and a Mevo+. Garmin R50 is consistently 20-40 yards shorter carry on the same swing compared to the two other devices. Some people mention lighting can be an issue but I doubt that is the case in your situation as you were outdoors. Others say Awesome golf gives better results or to artificially inflate the altitude setting. I don’t find any of the options acceptable. I want to love this device so much, but it doesn’t seem like Garmin wants to acknowledge and therefore offer a fix to those people who have units with this problem. I have a couple weeks left in my return window and will probably return it. It is a shame tho, because there is so much to love about the device.
