Is my R50 defective? Club path data seems wrong.

I've had my R50 for only a couple weeks and it keeps saying my club path is very left-to-right (like 10 degrees) for my 7 iron. I figured it was correct, so I've been working on trying to fix that. But then I decided to test it out with some very simple chip shots and made sure my club path was as close to 0 as possible and it still says 6 degrees to the right. So then I did a chip where I purposely went very right to left and it registered as 0 degrees but said my club face was very left.  And I'm 100% sure that wasn't the case.

Anyone else notice this about their R50, or is mine faulty?

  • Same issue, here, its been driving me crazy, even setting up wide open and intentionally hitting a slice. The ball flight checks out but it will still tell me -10 degrees face to path.

  • I recommend recording your swing from behind using a smartphone and then replay the video slowly to view what the path is showing in comparison to what the R50 is showing for the metric.

Also ensure you are using the club face sticker so the unit will record both club and ball data during the session.

If you continue to feel the metric is not recording correctly, I recommend contacting Garmin Support so additional information can be reviewed from your shot metrics, along with additional detailed shot logging that can be gathered as well.

  • Did you ever get a resolution to this issue? I'm having similar problems with mine. It's reading some shots with my driver at 8+ degrees to the right. I know based on my real swings that's not the case. I tested it by opening my stance way up to hit a low cut and swung way left. It still read at 2 degrees right. It feels like it's off by at least 6 degrees.

  • Im in a similar situation, but as a Righty, the reported path always seems to favor the right-to-left, which is a thing for righties. however, ive also done the Camera thing where i've recorded my swing, and through impact, ive verified I am capable of swinging with an In to Out path, but there are times id still get a 4 to even 10 degree reading from the monitor that it was going left. I figured it was capturing my club after impact but Im just guessing

  • I’m having the same issue. I only am getting in-to-out swing paths no matter what. Heck even saying my putter strokes are in to out. No matter what.

  • same, on any other sim mine reads 1-4* in to out, at most 6-8*, but on the Garmin it can read like 10-16*

  • Yeah my estimate is that it's off by 5-6*. The consistent ball flight, which I know isn't exact, shows basically a pull draw.

I went to the range tonight and very few of my swings gave me the impression I had a severe in to out swing. Most of my irons went straight with a couple drawing a bit. The club path reading on the R50 just doesn't seem right.

  • Just spitballing, but I do often wonder if the unit's readings are sensitive to the alignment and offset settings as well as the club sticker placement, any of which can throw off the output. I have basically given up trying to hit wedges on the unit because the readings are much more severe on side and back spin than reality. (I've also learned that my particular gel mat suppresses backspin on full mid-and long iron shots but that's not the unit's fault.)

  • I see people who have other launch monitors like the GC3 have multiple stickers on their clubs. Any idea if that helps with accuracy?

  • Yeah I came to the conclusion that my mat kills spin, too. Every reading with my 7 iron spins at 4k or lower. Can't get it above that.

With regards to alignment, I usually use default but did try to do a manual alignment and that made no difference. I'm not sure what the offset is for. I should also try moving the stickers on the club face once.
