Aspect ratio won’t save + issue on specialty practice

First, the changes to aspect ratio are welcome and work well.

1) I cannot get the aspect ratio to save across the various apps within, nor will the settings save when I turn it on and off. The 16 degree right hand offset saves fine but my r50 always defaults back to 16:10, and I have to set it up fresh every time I turn it on.

2) on the specialty practice areas, after I change the aspect ratio as noted above, when I change from straight on to another target, and then to a 3rd, the external display will not re-center to hit at the new target. So, effectively, I’m hitting at the woods for a target 30+ degrees a completely different direction.

I did a full factory reset and reinstalled the updates, and it’s still doing the same.

ideas/help!

  • The aspect ratio settings must be set each time the HDMI is connected from what I have observed...however, the center line offset remains the saved from what was entered previously. Aspect ratio must also be configured prior to starting a session and should be ending a session before allowing changes to be made in Settings.

My recommendation is to make an adjustment to the center line offset starting at 0 in the middle, also ensure the ratio is set prior to starting the session to what is should be during the session.

  • Thank you.  It's helpful to know I wasn't missing something, but this is really something that should be added into the next update... having to reset the screen settings every single time is tedious, especially if you forget to do it initially.

It's not the end of the world, and the change is welcome, but surely I'm not the only one kind of annoyed by it...

    Thanks again.

  • One update to my initial response above...

The following scenarios are relevant to the aspect ratio settings on the Approach R50:

    • In Settings > External Display > If you have "Mirror R50 Display" switched on...the aspect ratio is not applied and will not display as a setting option. This is True as well in the Settings menu for External display that is offered within Home Tee Hero and Practice sessions.
    • Switching "Mirror R50 Display" off will result in the "Aspect Ratio" setting re-appearing as an option in the external display setting menu when viewed in the regular Settings > External Display section...as well as in the Setting menu available within Home Tee Hero and Practice modes, select "External Display" from the menu list.
    • The Aspect Ratio format chosen and then selecting "Save" will result in the setting you chose staying the same when you disconnect the HDMI or start new sessions, and if you power the device off and back on (if using the same display you had the HDMI connected to when the aspect ratio option was saved). This is true when the device is powered off, ending a session or virtual round, and when disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable to the same display source.
    • ***If you connect the R50 to a different display type than the display that was connected when aspect ratio settings were first saved...the aspect ratio will setting will default to the format at the top of the list "typically 16:9"
  • Cody, thank you...

I'm not using "mirror" in my settings, so that isn't appliable.

I do not find Bullet Point 3 to be accurate.  Every single time I power down the unit, it goes back to old settings... I prefer 4:3 to fit my enclosure, but it appears to revert back to 16:10 every time I power down.

I'm not disconnecting the HDMI, nor using a different display.  It just reverts back to whatever aspect ratio is more native (for lack of a better description)... I don't know if this is user error, but the to best of my knowledge, I am making these aspect ratio edits in the earliest screen possible, before going into any particular session, so that would seemingly imply I'm saving global settings.  But, in practice, I'm just saving settings for that session, and then starting over again.

This becomes tricky and challenging because I then have to constantly tinker with the projection settings, and it does get a little old.

Anyway... is there something I'm missing about the order of screens from start up in order to get the aspect ratio to save when turning off the unit?

I've tried doing a factory reset and reinstalling the updates, but the same issues persist.  Given that nobody else has chimed in, I am wondering what I'm doing wrong.

    Thanks.

  • It may be different when reconnected per the display type the HDMI is being connected to.

I have our team here at Garmin looking further into the ratio saving to see if what you described is normal or not, to get further clarification officially from our end.

Once I have more info I will reach out to you and let you know!

  • I have also sent you a direct message requesting some additional info. You should see request in the message icon box in the upper right section of the forums site.
