Travelling with the R50? Checked luggage or carry-on luggage?

Has anybody travelled with their R50? Is it an item that needs to be checked or is it an item that can be carried on?

What's the battery size inside the R50? In terms of watt-hour (Wh)? I suspect this would be one of the deciding factors for a lot of airlines

  • I would think the Garmin staff could answer this, as I'm sure they travel with their R50's a lot.  Getting a custom foam-insert hard-case would be an option if you fly with it a lot, but only if the battery is not lithium-ion.

  • Yes I agree, I was hoping  could lend some insight on the battery specification or any other hardware which might be a limiting factor in the ability to travel with the R50, ether as a carry-on or as a checked luggage.

I can appreciate different airlines will have different restrictions and it would still be good to get some specific details direct from Garmin.

Mod note:  the word "airlines" is on our forbidden list due to a history of related spam. That is the reason these posts need to be approved.

  • Called Garmin support. Here are the numbers for the battery I've received.

    Voltage 7.2V

Electric charge in milliamp-hours: 12000 mAh

    This calculates to 86.4 Wh.

Hope this helps someone in the future

  • All of the information publicly available on the Approach R50 is as outlined below in terms of the battery:

In regards to travelling with the Approach R50, each airline will have specific rules for carry-on or checked-in bags that will need to be reviewed for their current listings and regulatory information.

Customs and regulatory laws for transport of items will also need to be reviewed for each country or location travelled to.

The internal battery and components are proprietary to Garmin and not provided through the online reference material provided for the Approach R50. Garmin does not have specifics per locations travelled to for the requirements needed for travel.  Typically the most common requirement that is needing considered is the dimensions of the carrying case or box the R50 is packaged in, which can be measured in person to make sure it meets the various carry on dimensions allowed by airlines...which will vary by airline and the specific airplane model the flight is using.
