Face to Path, Spin Axis and Shot Tracing

In the vast majority of instances, the Spin Axis calculated for a shot is the complete opposite of what the Face to Path value would indicate. For example, if the face is closed to the path, we would expect to observe a ball flight bending to the left (draw) for a right-handed player.  Instead, the calculated Spin Axis represents ball flight bending to the right. (Fade).  Shot tracing consistently displays ball flight associated with Spin Axis.

Why this is problematic?  Nearly every shot that I hit is being displayed via shot tracing incorrectly. The shot tracing is not an accurate representation of the data that's been captured.

Recommendation: From what I've discovered, the G50s Spin Axis metric is a calculated data point. Evaluate the formula for errors

Could "negation" be applied to the formula to get the correct opposite Spin Axis values?

Is this an issue that can be found across all units or is it unique to me?

  • If the club path is going left and face to path is going left you can still have right side spin. If the path is going 1.9 left and face to path is 0.7 left you will have some right spin. Face more open than path.
if these numbers were the opposite it would create more of a slight pull left and drawing left with left spin.

Now if you had club path 3.0 deg right and face to path 5.0 left you would see left spin and maybe more of a push draw.

The face is more closed than the path in this case.

  • Quick question in your post you mentioned a right-handed player being an example but I am not sure if you are referring to the concern occurring with left or right handed player enabled in the settings specifically on the unit when seeing the concern with the metric displaying for Spin Axis. Can you confirm if you are speaking from left handed or right handed use?

Also since the 4.10 update has released, are you seeing the concern with the metric?

We would not have a specific breakdown of how each metric of data is provided for the shot due to that being proprietary...but we can pose the question to our Quality & Engineering team in terms of how you feel the ball flight is not being represented.

If this is the case on 4.10 please reply and I will reach out via direct message to get some additional information from you to submit over.

    - Thank you

  • Agree 100%. My path is consistently +2 degrees or greater (in to out) and my clubface is consistently - 2 degrees (closed). And spin axis values are consistently positive (fades).

  • See if you can have face to path 4 deg left and club path 2 deg right. This would not give right spin  and if it does something is off.

iI had my unit out on the range on Saturday and it was reading correctly with actual ball flight.

  • Hi GC,

I am a right-handed golfer, and my settings indicate that the unit is set to a right-handed player. My unit has the last update, 4.10.

I just downloaded session data for June 6, 2025, and evaluated the results for FTP and SA. Of the 77 shots captured from the session, 64 had negative (-) FTP values, and 40/64, 62.5% had negative (-) SA values.  That is a definite improvement. Thank you and I hope it can get even better.
