Continuous Wifi/Hotspot Needed for Connect to GSPRO, E6, etc?

Say I want to connect to GSPRO in a location without wifi. I can connect the Garmin to my phone's hotspot, then connect to GSPRO. Does the Garmin need a continuous wifi connection (i.e. hotspot) in order to stay connected to GSPRO, or can I turn the hotspot off and remain connected?
