Smash Factor numbers seem very low?

Just curious if anyone else is seeing that smash factor seems very low when hitting?

Had a friend hit on my R50.. it was 3 degree's and i had to adjust the temps/altitude to get the distance numbers near to where they should be.. but... he firstly hit PW with 154 yard carry and a smash of 1.08.. then he hit 6 Iron with a 194 yard carry showing a smash of 1.11.

On Trackman these numbers are always mid to high 1.30's?

  • hi Dave I made a test on my R50 with a pw. My swing speeds are not as high as yours so maybe not fully comparable.  Anyhow my smash factor is always around 1,20 and spin rate around 7500, launch angle around 26 degrees.  I would agree with you that something seems to be wro ng with your R50. Some screenshots below..

  • Thank you for sharing this... hopefully Garmin will sort it out for me

  • The 190 yard shot with the 5 iron seems like it read in meters and displayed yards. Should have been 190 meters imo!

  • there is a really good youtube channel... Joe Lagowski i believe his name is... he mentions exactly the same thing you just said in one of his video's.. can't remember which one though... how even though some peoples units are set to yards they seem to be displaying incorrectly in metres?.. but he also says when going into the Garmin app it was displaying correctly in there.. i can assure you it is still displaying the distances in the app

  • So... done a bit of investigating and it looks like it doing some kind of calculation incorrectly

This is the snip from the Garmin app

Excel data export from the Garmin app

These are images from the Garmin R50 on the night

Carry distances are different.. maybe my unit is doing something in metres when it is set to yards?

It looks like it has done something different with one of the shots showing the 205 carry in the garmin app? But not one of my screen captures has a ball travelling that far?

  • Garmin? Are you looking at this? I don’t want to say too much at this time but will dig a little further tomorrow.

i have had communication with Joe about something he saw as well. He is a mastermind with launch monitors and is someone you can trust!

  • Cheers... thanks for your help and actually taking time to look at my issues.. and if i multiply the carry numbers i see by 1.094 (metres to yards conversion) then the carry distances seem to be a lot more accurate

  • That ball speed is low in relation to club speed. You had a push draw on one of those swings and ball speed just looks low.

Are you taking it to the retailer to check this out?

  • The retailler have passed all my data and the data Garmin have requested from the unit... i am just waiting for them to come back to me

But after taking the limited number of shots and multiplying the carry distance by 1.094 it brings the distances into line with pretty much exactly what we were seeing on the night.

My thinking is if the unit was displaying the correct distance then the maths the unit was doing would bring the ball speed up into line with what we should of been seeing.

My feeling is this can only be software and fixable with a firmware update?

I've not been very well but i am going to try set the unit to metric and gather data with metric numbers to see if it seems to start to behave.. then to see if changing it and changing it back as any effect..(from metres to yards)

  • Handicap golf just released two videos comparing R50 to two different Trackman units. Club speed and ball speed were lower as well as carry yards on the R50. Sometimes more off than I would like to see. Maybe another update can get the R50 more in line.
